NFL bans hip drop tackle

Someone broke it down. It's only a penalty if you fall on their legs. If you hit the ground first and bring them down that would be considered clean.

or tackle low, get dragged, have your forward momentum carry your lower body because that's a basic rule of physics, and get flagged for hip-drop.

Henry going to have 2500 all purpose yards this season because there is functionally no way to bring that man down unless you meet him at the LOS head up before he builds any steam, and if Deebo Samuel catches a slant, just move out the way and let him score in the least amount of time so your offense can answer the 7 points without your defense getting someone ejected trying to do their job.

fukk it. I want to see some trick play screens to OGs and OTs. How you supposed to bring them down? a CB ain't gonna do it, and the only way a LB/DT can without it being hip-drop is to overpursue, turn around and square up for a tackle.

Some mf’s are slippery ans hell and your tackle may start in the midsection and momentum takes sliding down. Then ref interpretation is another thing that will be subjective. Again, the players are against it. Pretty sure they have a better gauge in this than us couch surfers

I don't think it'll be a big deal to be honest. It's not a common play, but the funny thing is, despite all of the rule changes, scoring was actually down last year.

I wouldn't say the hip drop tackle is intentionally dirty per se but it is tackle that is a fall back when either you take a bad angle and you are trying to compensate or poor tackling technique. It will be an adjustment but defenses and defensive coaches will ultimately pivot

Even though league brass doesn’t like the decrease in scoring, this year was one of the best seasons in recent memory. You had different play styles, there wasn’t mid qb’s being glazed, and defense was apparent in the playoffs.

Hell, the Lions are a throwback to the Ravens w/ Ray Lewis. Detroit had a game managing qb; strong run game, and good defense. Detroit wasn’t some high powered offense, and they almost made it to the SB(they should’ve but that’s neither here nor there). I don’t like the ruling, because the generic arcade football 3-5+ years ago turned me off from the NFL.

True because I don't remember seeing the hip drop all that much in the past.

Go watch some random game from the 90s, and dudes didn't tackle like that. If a breh gets by you and you're trailing him, they'd run and drive through them or dive at the legs and wrap up.

Pretty sure rugby got rid of it so the NFL needs to as well........but.......they need some rules to give defense a little boost.

Geno was running to the sidelines. The defender could have tackled him forward but instead he whips into his leg to pull him back. That's why players get hurt.

All these hip drops have the defender leaving their feet and getting horizontal into the offensive player's legs:

This is not a normal tackling motion. Remember Roy Williams injuring multiple players with a horse collar? That wasn't a normal tackle either. If they were you'd see them happen frequently. They don't which tells you that the vast majority of players don't need to do it to bring someone down. Both tackles are unnecessary and you won't see this flagged much because unless you're playing dirty it won't happen.
