Yeah it's for convenience. Somalia also uses mobile banking/transactions heavily. You can go to a restaurant and do a transfer in seconds via phone. Even fruit sellers by the road side use it. We don't have this in the West... :wtf:

You can do so much with the phone out there. Gives you a list of options.

It was born out of necessity. This is the kind of innovation I like coming out of Africa.

Electronic transfers improve Somalia economy

So the problem that some of you have is that Nigeria did not make their own identification cards?:what:

It is a Nigerian identification card with a credit card auxiliary embedded in it.

Its almost like some people hope for the worst:leostare:
it's not a matter of hoping for the worst. i saw a thread/post here where some politician was being interviewed saying nigeria has no real govt. and exposing my mans jonathan. a country got to get it's shyt straight before setting up it's citizens for something like this. and obviously corruption in nigeria isn't gonna end tomorrow nor by 2019.

@Marvel
lol this is actually the first thing I thought of. The grand irony in al of this is that the one group that would most likely fight the hardest here in the US iis the hard right Christian groups.

Imagine a day when you'll have to vote for a republican because he fears the mark of the beast and it's somehow in your best interest...

no nicca. when i saw verve, and especially mastercard logo, i went

Sir.
MasterCard WAS NOT granted monopoly for the payment applet. I take it you are making an assumption and you can be forgiven for that. The truth is MasterCard, Visa and even Verve were given opportunities to be the pilot partner for the payment applet on the chip. I must add that each of the 13 applets on the chip are totally isolated from each other.
Visa was the first to approach NIMC but were footdragging and Nigerians were saying "NIMC is not ready. NIMC is stealing and wasting Government funds" and all the rest of it. Verve also did not take the plan seriously.
Eventually MasterCard signed up and elected to partner with Access Bank for the payment applet.
Neither MasterCard nor Access Bank have any form of access to the National Identity Database. PERIOD.
To get back to your point about the "monopoly" of MasterCard, the fact is that the agreement is only for the FIRST 13 MILLION cards. End of Discussion. If Verve gets serious, then they will have the next 13 million cards. For anyone who knows about smartcards, this means that the Card Profile has to change to accommodate the replaced applet. Finally, MasterCard is not a payment processor. Interswitch, Etransact and Unified Payments (formerly Valucard) are payment processors in Nigeria.

God bless.
