Nah... this social calculus that an interest in education from a black youth + black peers = accusations of "acting white" is simply a white supremacist myth that has somehow caught hold and is now something black people like the author invest in. You get accused of acting white if you inflect your voice patterns to mimic the whitest of white guys (Jason Riley), and purposefully distance yourself from your people in obvious ways. Now you're "acting white". Being smart alone is not going to bring about those accusations with any sort of frequency.

Have I been called a "square", "geek", "nerd"...yup. Those are racially neutral things tho, and every race does it. But if you establish that you are able to navigate between multiple social worlds, and have the desire to do so (connect with black peers) you're gucci --- and its been my experience that the overwhelming majority of black folk have strongly encouraged my pursuit of education. These sorts of pieces are comically out of touch.

This isnt true at all... in all the majority black schools around Detroit , smart kids are viewed as smart. Dumb kids aren't looked at as acting more black. Some of the most popular people have great gpas.

Basically, most of the popular kids In my school got good grades. I'm tired of folks saying this shiit. Matter of fact in most hoods, everyone kinda knows to not mess with those kids who are really doing their thing. Who are these people that they interview for these studies.
