How you reason?
Defending yourself is escalation?
In who's book?

Ever since I was knee high I was taught if somebody hits you you hit them back

Will Smith is so adapt at whooping ass he did fukk a man up in 10 seconds. lol

Man foh with these ducktales. Hancock was a movie character
I mean my job is teaching combat sports and self defense to people, so my reasoning is based on a blend of personal experience combined with legal reasons.

With legality we're talking super grey areas here. I don't know California state law, but in general...if someone commits battery against you (which is exactly what Will did) you can defend yourself, but not after the battery is over. As soon as Will started backing away, then (as weird as it sounds) Chris did not legally have the right (at least in most jurisdictions) to then become the aggressor and fight back. The legal green light time frame for Chris to fight back was immediately upon being hit. And he did clench his fist up, but as soon as it was clear Will wasn't about to hit him again, you can see Chris release his fist.

None of this is taking into ethical considerations. I'm totally fine in principle with the ethics of Chris running down Will and fighting him, even if he wasn't in his legal rights to do so. I just happen to think it was a classy and professional move by Chris to not further escalate an already tense situation. If Will had hit Chris multiple times then absolutely I think Chris should not only fight back, but I think he'd be wrong NOT to fight back. You have every right to defend yourself, and in many cases I think you have a moral obligation to defend yourself.

I think Chris did a great job assessing that it was a slap and not a punch, and that the aggression ended as soon as it started. Don't get it twisted. There are times where I think it's fine to escalate, even if it's illegal. But I think Chris came across looking like the bigger man and looking more professional by standing tall and keeping it moving. It made Will look more unhinged and it made Chris look more professional.

that's true, but he should still be able to take a joke.

The ideal play would've been to speak with Chris about it afterwards.

I said it in the Oscars thread I think that Will just snapped. At damn near EVERY televised awards show this season Will Smith has been disrespected. Laverne Cox disrespected him and Jada to their faces. Rebel Wilson went on stage at the BAFTA’s (where Will became only the fourth black man to win Leading Actor) and disrespected him. Chris Rock was just the final straw in a looonnggg line of disrespect that Will has taken. I don’t even think it was about Chris. I truly think that had Jesus himself got up on that stage and made that joke it would have set Will off.

Will been telling us since 2005 that all that trying him was bothering him.

To quote a Chris Rock joke, “I’m not saying he should have slapped him…but I understand “

Comedians like to talk shyt and hide under the guise that “it’s a joke.”

They can be very funny style.

He’s going in on a frail black woman in her 50s over her having alopecia, but yet made a documentary about black women’s hair and how important it is to the black community. You can’t make this shyt up.
I get that. I do think comedians get a way with lot, and people do have to be more aware of what they're saying and what can be triggers. But ultimately, you shouldn't swing on someone over a joke. There has to be some ability to keep your emotions in check and just respond verbally when you're attacked verbally. Had he just screamed at him "Keep my wife's name out your fukking mouth" that would've sufficed. I think it was a combination of things boiling over and him over compensating.

I don’t think he should have done it on stage at that moment. He should have approached him backstage, but a part of me feels he wanted to do that in front of the whole world.

:mjlol: at anyone saying Chris Rock should've retaliated or gotten street on Will. Dude is damn near 60 years old and been a millionaire since the 90s, he not gonna tarnish his rep in his industry by responding like a fool

I feel for Will though. Dude is clearly going through some shyt and unfortunately had a meltdown with millions watching :francis:

A bunch of online losers with nothing to lose but their pride gassing him up :snoop:

Will ego out of control now :hubie:

Laverne Cox made a joke about “Entanglements” and then when she was called out for it refused to apologize.

Rebel Wilson went on stage and said “The last year was full of great performances but my favorite performance was watching Will Smith pretend to be ok with all of Jada’s boyfriends”
