1998 really changed the landscape, and was probably the most divisible year. Every year prior had 1-3 artists jockeying for position the entire year, but '98 was truly seasonable. I guess since the labels were simply looking for that next superstar to put all of their eggs into that basket, coming off how '97 played out...they ended up stopping the push for the next.

I'd say this is the most accurate description. Though I'd say Nore was 1A & X was 1B in the summer, because the momentum of It's Dark & Hell Is Hot was still very strong into the summer. There was like 5 '98s. It really was broken up that much. X had the Spring. Canibus had a hip-hop head run between spring and summer. Nore had the summer on lock. Ja emerged end of Nore's run...Jay had the Fall, X had the Winter. Pun had a run before X in the Spring.

The difference between them and Nore is that their runs all faded into the next, but Nore's summer run ended sharply.
