https://www.thecoli.com/threads/the-shyt-these-record-labels-do.762702/

Last weekend this shyt had me sick.

I learned that some labels will offer record deals to artists to shelve them and eliminate them as competition to the artists they REALLY wanna push.

I learned that after all the silly costs are taken out of making a record, some artists are actually in the negatives and don’t even make shyt from their own record sales.

I also learned about 360 deals where now record labels demand a cut even for profits artists make on the side in addition to the record sales.

shyt had me hittin all types of :mjcry::picard::ohhh::hhh:

Model and acting agencies do the same. They put someone on an exclusive contract, just so they won’t be the competition. And if the agency pays for photographers, travel, apartment, they take it from the check. This is why a lot of those girls are on those yachts “socializing”.

I think the problem is she stuck between two worlds. She wants to be an artist that transcends genres but that means silly compartmentalized music industries, fans, stations don’t know where to put her music. I also noticed that song wasn’t really gettin play on blk stations either. And it was definitely a whole vibe.
It’s a nice little song from two black people and it wasn’t played on black stations lol. I know Khalid gave it the pop stimulus but damn! Yeah those songs you posted are all over the place.. she got to find a style to run with.

Yep I think anybody can see from her artistry that she doesn’t want to be in one lane. Like you said they were all over the place. For somebody like me (with my ADHD ass) I think it’s refreshing. I like the idea that blks can do R&B, and Pop, throw some Reggae, some House...hell if she decided to throw a lil rock in there I wouldn’t be mad at it either! Because all of that shyt is ours anyway.

Two completely different genres, sounds, vibes...but they are still dope as fukk.

But from a market standpoint b/c most listeners are simple and myopic in how they try to fit people into boxes based on the way our brains work, it makes her a hard sell. Which is unfortunate b/c I like multifaceted people and anybody who can do some smooth R&B and switch it up to some Britney Spears type pop is pretty cool by me.:obama:

See that’s some shyt I would NEVER have known.
I was just joking around when I said some of these 6 cert, 6 figure Coli kings might be richer than ur Music Crush Mondays, but that shyt could be hella true.

it makes me wonder if all those artists flossing with chains and cars, $1000 weaves and cribs are really just wracking up credit card debt. That’s some scary shyt to imagine.

It can’t be that bad tho...right?:merchant::lupe::damn:

The truth of the industry is why so many turn to drugs and suicide, endless hours of grinding and creative exhaustion and you don't see any major payoff, if ever.

I'm an engineer by trade and an independent producer, unless you are a songwriter and/or producer, you aren't going to eat....the best type of royalty is a writing credit via PRO (Performing Rights Organization) which gives you opportunities to license your music (ie your song gets selected to play in movie, you'll get a check for 50k)....that is Bruno/Drake/Cardi level)....even with that, the label you sign with gets a cut off that song.....so say for example Meghan Trainer got her first royalty after 9 months and it was split between the co-writers, producer, and publisher. She may get 100k-200k from that song from Spotify, but that probably has to go back to the advance the label fronted her.

Your favorite artists are struggling more than likely....

Most people do NOT know this shyt.

It is all a facade...pretty sad, I dabble in production and sell some projects, but I'd never pursue it full time because every manager I've met try to jerk me....and I am upfront about my money and that scares off many scam artist. Legit companies come with the paper work asap if they want to deal with you. Too many artists get sold a dream in 360 deals and not having legal counsel and end up living in Mama's basement....

I sold a piano piece to a company in England....took 3 months to process my invoice....

Damn.
I didn’t know this about my parents for the longest time but they used to be song writers. They had HUNDREDS of lyrics copywritten. Lionel Richie allegedly tried to do them dirty for a few of their songs. I didn’t even know there was that much money in song writing. They never followed up with any lawsuits b/c they don’t have knowledge of the laws and not enough money for legal counsel, and they fear counter lawsuits.
This shyt is grimey. I’ve learned a lot from a lot of posters here.:salute:
