They just weren't good stewards of the brand. Giving anybody and everybody projects instead of being selective about what was made to keep a high quality level. The market got so saturated with these things that many people stopped caring.
The buildup to Infinity War let them get away with a lot of stuff like a Captain Marvel movie doing over a billion. As we can see from The Marvels she wasn't really that hot.
They had a great idea with this connected movie universe that built up to a huge crossover event but pass that they didn't know where to take things. We're 17 years into this and it's a perpetually ongoing story with no end or even a point to it anymore in sight. Everything is a tease or a cameo to the next tease or cameo.
This is the film version of the TV series LOST. They're making it up as they go alone acting like there's a plan and unlike LOST where they decided to end it this can't be allowed to ever end or reach a climax point. We all like media but nobody desires a given piece of it to continue forever.

In addition to the brand rot, another reason this movie is flopping is that the FF are a hard concept to pull off. The idea of the "first family of superheroes" doesn't resonate with casual fans like it did in 1961. I posted on here that in order for the Four to be pulled off, Marvel would either have to lean into the FF's retro charm and/or lean into the high science concept. Historically, the retro charm and high science has been the appeal of the Four since Waid/Wieringo and what has made the FF standout from the Avengers and X Men.
I havent seen the movie yet, but I hear the retro aesthetic was very surface level. So, the real question is will leaning into the more scifi elements work to establish the FF as a viable MCU IP? As of now? I don't think so. Anime and video games have changed the taste of the Nerd world in ways Marvel isnt gauging. I think modern, younger audiences want "cooler" and more visually appealing characters/action scenes. Only two of the FF provide that (the Storm Siblings). Nobody wants to see strechy powers and the Thing will only look cool when he fights the Hulk.
For the record, the FF is not the only franchise with this problem. This is the same reason why Star Trek and Legion Of Super Heroes cant recapture their peak of popularity. These three are all Atomic Age, Retro Futurist franchises saddled by outdated character concepts and an overall optimistic sense of humanity's evolution that modern audiences just do not have.

Weapons Runs Away From Freaky Competition: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 8-10)
It looks like Weapons was the Freakier of the two new releases with an outstanding $42.5M opening weekend. That is the third best opening for a horror movie this year, behind Final Destination: Bloodlines' $51.6M and Sinners' $48M. Weapons actually made more in its opening weekend than the $40.8M total Zach Cregger's Barbarian made in 2022. That's quite the trajectory with only 2 films under his belt.
Weapons Comes a little more than a year after Longlegs opened with $22.4M last July. That movie had a lotta hype due to Nicolas Cage's performance. We get something similar from Amy Madigan as Gladys. Both movies outstripped their production budgets too. Longlegs was made on a shoestring $10M while Weapons needed $38M to make it to the silver screen. There were some definite similarities between these two in terms of plot. I also saw some The Black Phone and a little Get Out mixed in Weapons' DNA. Oh, and throw in a little bytch of The VVitch for good measure.
I wouldn't be shocked to see Weapons finish with a $180M domestic total when it's all said and done. Audiences gave it an A- cinemascore, which is right in-between Sinners' A and Final Destination: Bloodlines' B+. Sinners grossed 5.8 times its opening weekend compared to Bloodlines' 2.68 multiplier. That's a 4.24 average multiplier for the top two horror movies this year. If Weapons has legs that long, that's where the potential $180M comes from.

Good to see Weapons do well, really good marketing campaign for it and the positive word of mouth and critic reviews only helped. Not much competition next week, so I could see it being #1 again.
