Yeah, I'll just catch Nobody 2 on Peacock. 1st film was cool, but this didn't look much different besides the setting.

Sometimes Netflix has to KPop Out and Show Hunters: Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 22-24)

Netflix, the world's biggest streamer, now has North America's biggest movie. They've decided to release KPop Demon Hunters in 1,700 theaters and were rewarded with an $18M "opening" weekend. It's the first box office win for Netflix. Their previous high was Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which made you l from 696 theaters in 2022. It wound up grossing $15M in total. So it's a win on multiple fronts for Netflix. And it's even more impressive when you consider that the movie only showed on Saturday and Sunday.

It's not really a surprise, though, as KPop Demon Hunters has been a big hit on Netflix since it's release. It debuted on June 20th and racked up 250M minutes viewed during the week of June 16-22. That total ballooned to 778M minutes in its second week. Its fourth week was its most watched yet at 817M minutes. Its fifth week saw it become the 3rd most watched overall on the Nielsen streaming charts with 949M minutes. And its most recent week (July 21-27) was the first time it crossed a billion minutes viewed with 1.03B.

So, KPop Demon Hunters is a beast. It's the second most watched Netflix Original movie with over 210M views. It trails The Rock's Red Notice with over 230M views. But Red Notice was never #1 at the box office. :manny:

With $15.6M in its third weekend, Weapons has passed $100M and then some with $115.8M.
It's the 14th movie to gross $100M this year and the 10th of the Summer. And it currently stands at $199.3M globally. :ehh:

ahh-justine.gif

Skipping to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which finished in a fitting fourth place with $5.9M. It's up to $257.2M domestically and $490M worldwide. It's the 23rd highest grossing movie,. domestically, in the MCU. It's soon to pass Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $259.7M

salute-human-torch.gif

Superman has crossed $600M after 7 weekends. It currently stands at $346.9M domestically and $604.4M globally. That domestic total makes it the 76th highest grossing movie ever, passing The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' $345.5M.

Speaking of passing $600M, another movie did just that. F1: The Movie has sped its way to $603.4M. It's Brad Pitt's biggest movie ever, beating World War Z's $531.8M.

Light weekend with Weapons taking the top spot again. Then Conjuring going to be #1 and continue the WB's hot streak.

Horror continues to thrive.

My Fickle Friend: The Summer 2025 Wrap-Up

It's Labor Day and that means that Summer is officially over at the movies. The season saw a cumulative gross of $3.59B. That might sound like a lot but it's 1% below last year's $3.6B. We're far removed from the $4B that had become the norm since 2007. Excluding the Covid and it recovery years of 2020 and 2021, we've only hit the target once in the last four years. :francis:

11Sinners$131,849,7913,518Apr 18Warner Bros.

Of the 11 entries, 10 were released in the summer, with Sinners being the lone spring holdover. That didn't stop it from reserving $131.8M during the season.

How did the Big 3 fare this Summer? Well, each Distributor (Disney, Universal and WB) can claim victory. Disney had the top earner with Lilo & Stitch making $423.3M. Word to Vito.

images3ezgifcomvideo.gif

Not only that, Disney had 3 entries in the top 11, including 2 in the top five. That includes The Fantastic Four: First Steps, finishing in an appropriate 4th place with $266.1M.

Then you have Universal with only 2 entries. However, both made the top five. And both made over $200M. Jurassic World made its triumphant return (after a near 3 year absence) with Rebirth, which earned $338.2M. That was the 3rd highest grossing movie of the Summer. And Universal also brought the live action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon to the big screen, where it made $262.9M.

If not for Tom Cruise and Mission: Impossible, Paramount would not have made the cut. The Final Reckoning just missed out on $200M and finished with $197.4M.

hanging-on-a-plane-ethan-hunt.gif

And then you have Warner Bros., who, for my money, was the MVP of the summer. They produced five of the top 11 movies including the aforementioned Sinners. They also distributed F1, which was produced by Apple, and has made over $600M worldwide including, $188.1M in North America. Superman kicked off the new DCU to the tune of $351.7M. It has made $611.5M worldwide. There has been some consternation regarding the $600M mark that I have seen in the Superman thread. I would agree that it has struggled to make it there but it has crossed the threshold nonetheless. :yeshrug:

WB also produced two horror hits with Final Destination: Bloodlines and Weapons. I enjoyed the former more but they both put up unexpectedly great numbers: FD: Bloodlines with $138.1M and Weapons with $134.9M. Weapons has been the surprise release of the summer.

So Warner Bros. had almost half the entries on the list. They had the second highest earner on the list. And they had the biggest surprise of the summer. They had hits from all angles and that's why they're my MVP of the Summer.

Labor Day Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 31-Sep. 1)

Gotta keep it short, here. Weapons didn't have the KPop Demon Hunters to contend with and made $12.4M over the holiday weekend, bringing its total to $134.6M, which makes it the #10 movie of the summer, commercially.

weapons-movie.gif

I remember writing about a little known movie released on this same weekend back in 2022 called JAWS. Well, the original summer blockbuster it was re-released for its 50 year anniversary. It made $9.8M, which was the second most this Labor Day weekend. 3 years makes all the difference, as the 2022 re-release "only" opened with $2.6M in 2022.

movies-jaws.gif

With the opening of Caught Stealing, Darren Aronofsky is back for his first feature since 2022's The Whale. It opened with $7.8M over the 3-day and $9.5M over the 4-day weekend. It stars Austin Butler, who also starred in Bikeriders, which was released in the summer of 2023 and had a $9.6M opening. Audiences gave both films the same B cinemascore. This dude may be the new hotness, like Jenna Ortega or Sophie Thatcher, but their non-IP fare don't do big box office. :manny:

Notables

After basically two years of searching for a distributor, The Toxic Avenger, thanks to Iconic Events, was released in 1,995 theaters and made $2.2M. I've never seen the 1984 original but I might have to check this out. Peter Dinklage stars as Winston and he's been stirring psycho shyt up in Dexter: Resurrection.

The hits keep coming for WB :ehh: . Had some interest in the new Conjuring film, but the lukewarm reviews had me thinking I could wait. Still, happy to see it do so well this weekend.

The Last (Rites) Shall Be First: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 5-7)

It's the first weekend of the Fall at the movies. However, there was anything but a falloff as The Conjuring: Last Rites obliterated all projections on the way to a franchise-best $83M opening. The Nun was the Conjuring Universe's best opening, with $53.8M in 2018. It's also a return to form for The Conjuring itself, as The Devil Made Me Do It was an HBO Max day and date release in 2021. That was thanks to the Kung Flu. It only generated $24.1M. Last Rites' $83M is actually more than the first two Conjuring movies' combined openings of $82.2M. That's a return to form and then some. :wow:

A few weeks ago, it was only supposed to debut with $40M according to Deadline. Now? It's the third best opening for a horror movie ever, trailing only the first two IT movie. It's (not It) also 7th best Fall opening of all time. And it's another win for Warner Bros., who own five of the top seven Fall openings. That includes Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which opened this very weekend last year to $111M.

It's even better when you look at the month of September. The Last Rites is the fourth best September opening. It's behind:
  • IT ($123.4M)
  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($111M)
  • IT: Chapter Two ($91M)
What do all four movies have on common? They've all been distributed by Warner Bros. They own this season. :ehh: That makes 8 number one openings for WB so far this year. They also have 7 movies that have opened north of $40M, which has not been done by any other studio. They were my Summer MVP and they keep the momentum rolling into the Fall.

With $5.3M, Weapons has totaled $143M. That passes Final Destination: Bloodlines' $138.1M (one of those WB #1's) to become the 12th highest grossing movie released this year.

throwing-a-coin-final-destination-bloodlines.gif

The Fantastic Four: First Steps has made $270.1M domestically and $511.2M globally. It's only the 7th Phase 4 or later MCU film (out of 14) to hit $250M domestically and $500M globally.

The JAWS 50th Anniversary re-release made $950K in its second weekend, bringing its total to $12.3M.
