False Start on Him; 2nd & 13: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 19-21)

OP retired?

Despite suffering a massive 75.5% drop, Demon Slayer - Infinity Castle still topped the charts, grossing $17.3M. After a ten-day run, the film's total earnings stand at $104.7M, making it the highest-grossing anime movie ever domestically.

The movie produced by Jordan Peele but not directed by Him, with a $13.2M opening, came in second place. Despite earning praise for Marlon Wayans' performance, the film did not have a strong opening drive.

At least we'll always have Rich Wigga, Poor Wigga. :lolbron:

The Conjuring: Last Rites had a much more stable third weekend, earning $12.2M and passing $150 million in domestic box office revenue. It's now the 12th biggest movie of the year domestically, displacing Warner Bros.' Weapons (made another $1.2M this weekend) which had previously held the spot with $149.7 million. WB really killing it with their horror output. :wow:

Taylor Swift: The Official #1 Release of a Music Video Starring a Showgirl: Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 3-5)

This time two years ago, Taylor Swift ruled the Box Office when she and AMC dropped The Eras Tour. That had the biggest opening of any concert film with $93.2M, on its way to $180.7M. It's output was all the more impressive because the movie only played on Thursday - Sunday.

This new Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl is not that. Its $33M opening is a 64.6% drop from The Eras Tour. But, on the plus side, that $33M opening is the best ever for a documentary, since this was a behind the scenes making of Swift's newest The Life of a Showgirl album.

swiftie-taylor-swift.gif

One Battle After Another made $11.1M which was a 49% decline from its $22M opening weekend. That was another win for WB last weekend, but a far cry from the $40M openings the studio has become accustomed to. In fact, it opened lower than DiCaprio's Killers of the Flower Moon's $23.2M. One Battle After Another's $42.7M 10-day total is 4% ahead of Killers of the Flower Moon's $40.9M. But One Battle After Another is not going to Apple TV Plus soon in the same way that KOTFM did.

one-battle-after-another-2025.gif

Next up we have The Rock's The Smashing Machine. It was a smashing failure, only managing a paltry $6M opening from 3,345 theaters. :picard: can't win em all, Dwayne.

giphy.gif

Ready to see the movie? :lolbron:

The Conjuring: Last Rites made $4M in its fifth weekend. With $167.8M, it's the twelfth highest grossing movie of the year. It'll have to make $190.3M if it wants to crack the top ten, which is most likely not happening.

screaming-lorraine-warren.gif

Avatar: The Way of Water was re-released in 3D and IMAX. It only mustered $3.1M. That brings its lifetime total to $687.2M, which is #7 all time. But it was really re-released to show a sneak preview of December's Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Had some interest in seeing Smashing Machine, but the okay reviews have me thinking I can wait for streaming. Plus have other films I can catch up on.

Still hope Rock gets that Oscar nomination, but the box office isn't helping.

Not surprised at swift taking number 1. Reason why I didn't bother going to the movies this weekend.

Yikes... Maybe they shoulda released Smashing Machine sooner. A24 fukking up this year... has any of their films done well this year:francis:

Long Walk and Him should have done better.

Tron: Ares Wins the Battle but Loses the War: Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 10-12)

Who was actually asking for another Tron movie? It's been 15 years since Tron: Legacy came out! Unfortunately, nobody really wanted Tron: Ares, so it didn't do very well – only opening with $33.5M. That was good for number one but down from the $40M projection Disney was hoping for. And it's even worse when they spent $180M on this disappointment. And it's lower than Tron: Legacy's $44M opening in 2010, which translates to $65M today. So, in actuality, damn near half the audience has been lost in the 15 year gap. :picard:

ready-to-race-ares.gif

Another flop for Jared Leto. :wow: Doesn't bode well for Master of the Universe in June.

Channing Tatum got a new one but not another one :skip:. Roofman did anything but blow the roof off with an $8M opening. This shyt screamed straight to streaming to me; it was released by Paramount. Looks like it should have went straight to Paramount Plus. That's a low opening, but it's somehow higher than Blink Twice's $7.3M, which Tatum starred in last year. :obama:

Yeah, general audience has never really messed with Tron in a major way, and the new one didn't do much besides looking and sounding cool to attract much of a different audience.

Disney will be okay, because they still have Predator, Zootopia 2 and Avatar 3 to close out the year.

It's blockbuster or bust in Hollywood now. Leto is officially box office poison, Leo's movie is set to lose over 100mil, and I doubt Margot's new movie is going to be a big money maker. The days of good profitable mid level movies is basically over.

The Black Phone Rings Again; Finn and Gwen answer the Call: Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 17-19)

Let's go back in time. I started this thread on June 5th of 2022. 3 weeks later, The Black Phone hit theaters. And it did alright, opening with $23.6M. There was some stiff competition Elvis ($31.2M) Top Gun: Maverick ($29.6M) and Jurassic World Dominion ($26.7M). So, with that, the first movie only managed a fourth-place debut. But the sequel, (The) Black Phone 2, really started strong, coming in first place with $26.5M. It wasn't looking too good after only $2.6M in Thursday previews, which was $400K less than the first movie's $3M.

That's a nice little rebound. The original Black Phone went on to make $90.1M but that was off of a B+ CinemaScore. Audiences graded Black Phone 2 with a straight B. That's good for a horror movie, but a half step down from the original. So we'll see what kind of legs The Grabber has.

Yeah, another win for horror with Black Phone 2. Should hold up well during the Halloween season.

Not so much for Good Fortune, but I'm always rooting for comedy to do well in theaters.

Chainsaw Man Cuts Black Phone's Cord: Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 24-26)

Remember last month's big opening? It was Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which made a whopping $70.6M. Well, Sony is back with a other anime. This weekend, Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc opened with $17.2M. That's a far cry from Infinity Castle's opening but it's still pretty good – just $53K shy of the $17.3M it earned in its second weekend. That gives Sony 3 number 1 weekends since September 12th, and they're all thanks to these two animes. :ehh:

giphy.gif

There was a knockdown, drag 'em out fight between The Grabber and whoever is in Regretting You (Dave Franco? Scott Eastwood?) The Grabber won with Black Phone 2 making $13M. That 52.4% drop is an excellent hold for a horror movie. Not quite as good as The Black Phone's -48.2% but still slightly more than its $12.2M second weekend. As such, Black Phone 2's $49M is running 3% ahead of The Black Phone's $47.4M. How's that for a franchise consistency? Shades of The Equalizer.

black-phone-black-phone-2.gif

The aforementioned Regretting You took third with a $12.8M opening.

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere was seen by no one and only managed to open with $9.1M. Another recent misfire from Disney, which had to be expecting a bigger opening on a $55M movie based on The Boss, starring Jeremy Allen White. He may be a star on The Bear, on the small screen, but the people ain't coming out to see him on the big screen.

The Halloween Box Office Massacre: Weekend Box Office Results (Oct. 31-Nov. 2)

It was a frightful weekend at the box office with all tricks and no treats. No movie cracked $10M. :picard: This was easily the worst weekend since the end of August where Weapons claimed no. 1 with $10.4M. Surprisingly, the 50 anniversary re-release of Jaws, which finished second that weekend with $8.2M, made more than this weekend's top earner: Regretting You, which brought home just $8.1M. We gotta go all the way back to March 14th to find a weekend where no movie made $10M. That weekend saw Novocaine set the box office on fire with $8.8M and earn the top spot. We'll see tomorrow when Regretting You's official numbers drop. But I don't think this will hold up for Paramount.

looking-up-clara-grant.gif

Number 2 -for now- is Black Phone 2 with $8M. It would be a real travesty if a horror movie didn't take home all the candy on Halloween weekend. As it stands, Black Phone 2's $61.4M after 17 days is a mill behind The Black Phone's $62.4M. The sequel has not held up throughout the week like the original. It's has elevated on the weekends and beat The Black Phone's $7.7M third weekend.

screaming-finney.gif

KPop Demon Hunters were back for the first time since August. And this time they were available in AMC theaters. This time around, the sing-along made $5.3M, bringing its total to $24.3M.

kpop-demon-hunters-kpdh.gif

Fifth place went to Bugonia with $4.8M. It opened last weekend but this was its wide expansion to 2,043 theaters. With $5.8M, it's already made more than Yorgos, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons' Kinds of Kindness' $5M. And much like the trio's last offering, I have no interest in this. :yeshrug:

bugonia-emma-stone.gif

Shout out to Back to the Future, celebrating its 40th anniversary. It was re-released and made $4.7M. And if we went back to the future, that would have been $1.5M.
