Ballerina at 91 million worldwide.....

forgot the studios only get half of that. Budget was 80 without marketing. Marketing was about 45 million apparently so they need like 250 milli to break even.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Jun. 20-22)

Last weekend I was unable to do the usual Box Office wrap-up. It was a big Sunday for me. So I'ma combine it with what is playing this weekend.

We have a couple of new entries with Pixar's Elio playing in 3,750 theaters. It was just last June that Pixar's Inside Out 2 opened with $154.2M, which was the studio's first $100M opening weekend since 2019's Toy Story 4. Elio is only expected to do $20M+.

The other wide release is the long gestating 28 Days / Weeks Later sequel - the aptly titled 28 Years Later. I've actually never seen either of the first two movies. Deadline has this opening with $28-30M.

The How to Train Your Dragon live action adaptation is coming off of an $84.6M opening weekend, which was the 4th biggest weekend of the year. It's made $113.7M so far and looks to win the weekend again.

Lilo & Stitch is coming off of $15.7M last weekend. Its $371.7M running total makes it the 2nd highest grossing movie based off of a movie and it's Disney's 2nd highest grossing movie adaptation - behind Aladdin.

A24's Materialists had a pretty strong $12M opening off of a $20M budget.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has totaled $169M after a $10.5M fourth weekend. Dead Reckoning made $151.1M after the same 26 days in theaters.

Ballerina made $9.7M last weekend, which was 60% drop from its first weekend. But at least its $45.4M running gross has passed the first John Wick's $43M total. :lolbron:

How 2 for 2 Train Your Dragon: Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 20-22)

28 Years Later tried, but in the end, it wasn't close to How to Train Your Dragon's $37M second weekend. After 2 weekends, it's totaled $160M, making it the 7th highest grossing movie this year. Coincidentally, How to Train Your Dragon's $160M is less than this year's highest grossing movie, A Minecraft Movie's $162.7M opening weekend.

giving-a-pat-hiccup.gif

28 Years Later opened with $30M. That's far and away a franchise best, beating 28 Days Later's $10M. And it outgrossed the combined $19.8M openings of 28 Days and Months Later. It was still $21.6M shy of Final Destination: Bloodlines, another long dormant horror franchise, opening. Still, it's already the #4 highest grossing horror movie this year, just $400K behind Heart Eyes' $30.4M.

scared-28-years-later.gif

It looks like Pixar is back to their regularly scheduled programming, after the anomaly that was last year's Inside Out 2. Elio is the new flop on the opening block with $20.8M. That is Pixar's worst opening ever. :ehh: but maybe it'll have legs like Elemental which is now Pixar's third worst opening at $29.6M. That was one of the great turnarounds in recent memory, as Elemental finished with a $154.4M total after a disastrous start. I guess it's possible - both movies have identical A cinemascores. Right now it looks like it'll be a struggle just to make it to $100M. :picard:

nervous-giggle-elio-solis.gif

At least Disney has Lilo & Stitch to pick up the slack with $9.7M. At $386.7M and counting, it's the second highest grossing movie this year, $11.5M behind A Minecraft Movie's $398.2M 31-day total. And it's already at $910.2M worldwide. A Billy looks guaranteed unlike A Minecraft Movie, which has petered out with "only" $953.6M.

clap-stitch.gif

With a $178.2M running total, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has passed M:I - Dead Reckoning's $172.6M. That was thanks to a $6.4M fifth weekend. The Final Reckoning has matched Dead Reckoning's $178.4M inflation-adjusted total. And with that the up-down franchise pattern continues. Look at this every-other entry consistency. It's like Rick Porcello's era alternating up and down every year for 7 seasons.

Screenshot2025062319.png

And through 31 days, The Final Reckoning has a 14% lead on Dead Reckoning's $156.1M. I'm looking for The Final Reckoning to final at somewhere between $196M-$203M.

The Keystone State
The animation style of Elio didn't really pull me or the kids in. They decided they'd rather go to the amusement park and see How to Train Your Dragon later this week.

Have the Mission Impossible movies made any significant profit since the 1st one??

Wow at Sinners still being on 500 screens.

I’m sure Elio isn’t as bad as Disney’s marketing efforts paints it to be but I’m laughing at the folks calling it a GrubHub commercial. Never was a fan of the bean-mouth CalArts animation. That shyt looks fukkin’ awful.

And sadly, joint is gonna push Pixar even further down the sequel well. If what I’m hearing is true about Ratatouille then they can keep that.

F1 Flies Out the Gate While M3GAN Stalls Out in the Pitts Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 27-29)

Jurassic World Rebirth opened today with $28M. Of the now 7 Jurassic movies, this is the 4th highest opening day, behind all 3 of the prior Jurassic World movies. Jurassic World Dominion the last entry in the series opened with $59.5M. But there's a very good reason for the "low" number - it's only the 2nd Jurassic movie to open on a Wednesday. Jurassic Park 3 opened on Wednesday July 18, 2001 and made $19M. That's $34.4M when you adjust for inflation. :whoo: It's looking like a $77.5M over the weekend and $127.5M over the five days.

jurassic-world-rebirth-logo.gif

As for last weekend, F1: The Movie sped its way to an impressive $57M. This is a huge win for Apple Original Films. It's far and away their biggest opening, blowing past Napoleon's $20.6M. It's the 7th best opening so far this year and 9th biggest weekend. :ehh: And it has only maintained its speed this week, making another $15.5M for a $72.5M running racing total.

laughing-joshua-pearce.gif

Universal took 2nd place as expected but it was no thanks to M3gan. How to Train Your Dragon went over $200M with $19.5M. With $207.7M, it's already the fourth highest grossing movie this year, passing Captain America: Brave New World's $200.5M. Sorry, Sam.

giving-a-pat-hiccup.gif

Elio actually finished in 3rd, barely, with $10.4M. That's a great hold, only dropping by 50% exactly off of its Pixar-worst $20.8M opening. Maybe an Elemental-esque run is in the cards this summer? :ohhh:

excited-glordon.gif

And we finally r3ach 4th place with M3GAN 2.0, opening with an abysmal $10.2M. :lolbron: That's a third of what the original M3GAN made in 2022 when it shocked with a $30.4M opening on its way to $95.1M. It's also less than Universal's own Wolf Man, another disappointment, which made $10.8M on its opening weekend off of the same $25M production budget that M3GAN 2.0 was allotted. But at least the sequel beat out Universal's The Woman in the Yard's $9.3M. :mjlol:

At this rate, M3GAN 2.0 will be lucky to see that $30M and audiences are unlikely to see M3GAN 3.0. :wow:

eyebrow-raised-m3gan.gif

28 Years Later
fell off something fierce, tumbling by 67.5% with a $9.7M second weekend. With $53.3M, it's the 3rd highest grossing horror movie of the year but that speaks more to this years crop of horror flicks. It is the highest grossing in the 28 Days franchise, surpassing 28 Days Later's $45M, which is $78.2M when adjusting for inflation.

Not gonna lie.. I'm legit surprised F1 is doing that well. I didn't think it would.

I thought M3gan would have hit at least 20mill opening weekend.

Jurassic World... Uh, Finds a Way: Independence Day Weekend Box Office Results (Jul. 4-6)

God bless America.

God bless dinosaurs.

God bless Jurassic Park.

And for current moviegoers: God bless Jurassic World Rebirth with a gargantuan $147.3 Independence Day opening.
jurassic-park.gif
Just when you thought it was over for the franchise after the last two duds, the dinos come roaring back. :wow:

Rebirth's $91.5M opening 3-day weekend is the 6th best Independence Day Weekend. It's sandwiched between 2 Spidey flicks. Right now, it's ahead of Spider-Man 2's $88.1M and just behind Spider-Man: Far From Home's $92.5M. It's also $16.5M clear of Despicable Me 4, which Universal released last Independence Day to the tune of a $75M 3-day and $122.6M over the five day holiday. When the 4th of July hits, other studios gotta

I started this thread just over 3 years ago, in June of 2022. My second box office update was for none other than Jurassic World Dominion, which opened with $145M. Coincidentally, each Jurassic World movie has opened lower than the previous entry:

Screenshot2025070621.png

But one thing all 3 of the Jurassic World movies have on common? They've all made a billion dollars. And Rebirth, with its $318.3M global opening, might just be on its way there. I distinctly remember track Dominion's crawl to a billion over many weekends. And I look forward to seeing if the latest entry can join the club. However, with the worst cinemascore since Jurassic Park lll

But Jurassic World wasn't the only movie that had a great weekend. Enter F1: The Movie with $26M on its second lap. With $109.5M, it's already raced past Bullet Train's (also starring Brad Pitt) $103.3M theatrical total.

thumbs-up-sonny-hayes.gif

Where have I seen this before, Kosinski?

thumbs-up-maverick.gif

How to Train Your Dragon came through with $11M. It's now one of only 5 movie this year to make $200. Its $224M gross makes it the 4th biggest movie of the year. It's actually ahead of Sinners' $215.4M after 4 weekends. Maybe $300M is in the cards.

flying-together-hiccup.gif

Elio is up to $55M after $5.7M in its 3rd weekend. Right now, it's no Elemental, whose $89.6M after 3 weekends was 3x its $29.6M opening. Elio's 2.6 multiplier is actually really good, just not Elemental levels. :yeshrug:

confused-elio.gif

28 Years Later once again held down fifth place with $4.6M. That brings its total to $60.23M. That's just behind The King of Kings' $60.26M. I did just watch 28 Days Later for the first time and now I'm more inclined to catch the newest entry. :ehh:

Scarlett Johansson Becomes Hollywood’s Highest Grossing Lead Actor With ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’

Her lead project career gross of $14.8 billion passes the totals of fellow Marvel alums Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson

Four years after exiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Black Widow,” Scarlett Johansson has now set a new record as the global box office’s highest grossing lead actor before inflation adjustment, passing fellow MCU stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. And it is all thanks to “Jurassic World: Rebirth.”
In the new film, Johannson takes over from Chris Pratt as the lead star of the dinosaur franchise, playing ex-military operative Zora Bennett in a mission to one of the few remaining islands where dinosaurs still live following the events of the “Jurassic World” trilogy. In its first six days in theaters worldwide, the film has earned a $318 million global launch, second only to the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2” among all 2025 releases.
According to data from The Numbers, that start gives Johansson a lifetime career box office gross of $14.8 billion in films where she plays a lead role or a lead ensemble role. More than $8.7 billion of that total comes from the four “Avengers” films and “Captain America: Civil War,” in which she played Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. Black Widow.

Other lead ensemble roles that count towards that total include her MCU debut film, “Iron Man 2,” and the two animated “Sing” films, in which she voiced the rock-loving porcupine Ash.
Of the top five highest grossing lead actors on The Numbers’ list, the only one that has not appeared in a Marvel film is Tom Hanks, with the others being Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Jackson (Nick Fury) and Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord). Jackson previously held the record with $14.6 billion, with Pixar’s two “Incredibles” films being counted by the site as a lead ensemble role.
Downey Jr., the MCU’s founding father, has $14.2 billion in leading roles in The Numbers’ books, with approximately $11.8 billion coming from his nine Marvel movies. His Best Supporting Actor Oscar winning turn in the $976 million “Oppenheimer,” as the name of that award would suggest, is not included in that count.
Depending on whether one counts Doctor Doom as a lead ensemble role, Downey Jr. will have a chance to take the box office crown back from Johansson in December 2026 when “Avengers: Doomsday” hits theaters … assuming of course that the film and/or its 2027 follow-up “Avengers: Secret Wars” doesn’t use multiversal loopholes to bring Black Widow back from the dead despite Johansson’s assertions in multiple interviews that her time in the MCU has ended.
