I can't prove this but I've always had a feeling cops just be driving around/parking in quiet areas and clocking in multiple overtime hours doing nothing.
Some of these cops be on a 50k salary and somehow going home with 130k at the end of the year.

This is pandemic overtime though. They haven't been paid for what they worked in ot in years, until recently. That probably hits the books different. Now the bill is due since contracts have been negotiated

This is about right. Sit around and do nothing because some other guy called off and wants to sit around and do nothing at home.
The starting salary is like $47k and many of these guys make double that due to OT. Granted, with the number of events that take place on the daily in NYC (sporting events, conferences, conventions, etc which are probably allotted for in OT budget) the extra man power is necessary.
However, this extreme budget overage is just a way to create wealth for uneducated and unskilled people

police budgets as robust as they ever were
in my city police salaries are public knowledge and you can just search cops you know by name
friend of mine made 160k one year i checked and like 60% of that was overtime
between the pension, the easy to get OT, the low responsibility, and non existent accountability I sometimes wonder if i should have went to the police academy instead of college and career in tech
I'd be at least a detective/sergeant level right now just off being able to pass the standardized test and seniority with another guaranteed 25 yrs of 6 figure salary (then a low 6 figure pension for life) to look forward to instead of worrying about layoffs
