I kinda agree with you on this. If you're not an American citizen or you do not have some type of residence here acknowledged by the US government, then you can't use our public services. I don't think I have a problem with that. The public school system and healthcare(can adult illegals receive medicaid?) are probably public services that most people are talking about.
Where it becomes controversial is children. People feel that there's a moral obligation to feed, teach, and provide healthcare to children. And I agree with them. But if businesses wouldn't hire illegals and/or were subject to some type of disciplinary action for hiring illegals, then those children wouldn't be in the States long enough to even need those services. Avoiding the problem altogether.
There has to be an effort on both ends and nobody wants to take responsibility. It's why I usually avoid these threads because ain't shyt gone happen either way.
Edit: Also, we don't live in Nazi Germany. You don't need to show papers to live here. It's kind of hard to not have someone who's illegal ride the city bus. It's impossible to stop that without infringing on the freedoms of citizens.

So long as the American way of life relies on the exploitation of resources from underdeveloped countries...we really have no right to exclude people from those countries from entering....for better or worse

Maybe a work program where they can get visas if they are properly vetted, pay taxes, and pay for their own healthcare would be a solution. But millions of people at once is a lot no matter what.
Another problem is that most of the Central American immigrants seem to move directly into high cost of living areas like the NYC metro, DC metro, and LA metro, where housing costs are getting higher and higher, and there is no labor shortage there.
