If you're already rooted, go over to XDA and download the latest update for your phone.

He doesn't have to put a custom ROM on the phone, he can download the STOCK ROM and just flash it on the phone since he's already rooted.

Root keeper is better than flashing roms just to update your phone to keep root
I'm not going to research his phone, but I know from experience that some phones won't allow you to perform an OTA update while rooted.
That's why I said what I said. Now if your method works for him good for him.

You know how those iphones got the flashing alert/notifcation lights, is there something likfe that for android phone. I have the S3.
