I finally saw this tonight. Amidst some mixed reviews I’ve heard, I fukked with this pretty heavy :ehh: I think it’s strong for like 85% of its run time and falls off the rails a bit by the end, but it’s a worthy sequel, and the most faithful modern Halloween take by far. I can’t write my thoughts out in sentence form, so I’m gonna bullet point things and spoiler tag some stuff:

  • I enjoyed the subplot with Laurie basically having PTSD and being consumed with vengeance for what happened to her in the OG films, turning into a survivalist basketcase that ultimately ruined her family life. It felt genuine and kinda tugged at the heartstrings, especially when she tried hard to reconcile with her daughter and granddaughter, but just couldn’t let what happened in 78 go.
  • I thought it was a cool angle that in order to combat Michael, in some ways she became him. Besides just the whole
    one minute she’s here, the next she’s gone homage, or her closing in on him from the shadows.
    Closing off the rooms, cutting out any space he might have been able to use to his advantage. She flipped the cat & mouse game he plays to her advantage. The criticism that it becomes more of an action film is valid, but it’s also something that Laurie planned and practiced out for a good majority of her adult life, so it didn’t feel out of place. Granted it did require some contrivances, but nothing to where I thought it was out of place or insulting. She instilled those instincts and actions in herself and her daughter, and we saw what happened there.
  • The homages to past films was cool. Minus the obvious big ones, the little things like some of the kids trick or treating dressed as the characters from Season of the Witch was fun.
  • I liked how there seemed to be an intention to keep the timeframe ambiguous, thus making it kinda timeless, kinda like It Follows. The kid in the beginning had a flip phone, later on there were smartphones, but technology played a small role in this. Wardrobes felt like an homage to the 70’s yet with a modern bend to them.
  • For some reason this felt like a mashup of the original Halloween crossed with part of Rob Zombie’s to me. The cinematography I credit for that, and the overall tone. The Zombie feeling portion feels like maybe the last portion of the film, ironically once it started to fall off for me :russ: The big things that made it feel like so to me we’re like
    Michael stomping the doc’s head like a grape, shyt was overtly violent and gratituous, like the kills in the Zombie films.
    And also when the granddaughter fell down in the woods, surrounded by the mannequins, and everything felt like a bad acid trip for a second :dead:
  • If I could pinpoint the exact scene where I started to think shyt went left, it was
    Diet Loomis turning heel.
    It felt like a swerve for the sake of it, it felt unearned, and lacking any meaning or build, and ultimately just felt out of place. I’ll echo what I read someone else say, that they basically ran out of steam by the end and said fukk it. The final climax I didn’t have issues with, as I said before it made sense within the narrative of the movie and within the realm of believability to what the characters were.
  • There was a distinct lack of strong male characters in this, as most were mostly incompetent or ineffective. I’m all for Scream Queens getting their shine, but it felt like the Last Jedi where the men looked either stupid or like a$$holes solely to elevate the female characters. It’s a minor gripe for me, but it is something I felt watching the film, especially with the lack of a Loomis type hero in this one.
  • I didn’t mind the comedy, it never really overstayed it’s welcome or ruined any tension or anything.
All in all this is like a B/B+ for me. I think if the last quarter of the movie was as good as the earlier parts, it’d be one of the best modern horror films, but it’s still a worthy addition to the Halloween series.

i thought it was pretty good for the most part,

However in 2018 a man that killed only 5-6 people isn't that big of a deal, which is sad but I felt like he was all hype and only a real threat to Laurie and her family, those other people were collateral damage.

I also agree with everyone saying how dumb people were when they needed to be, and how annoying those kids were

I felt the same way about this part of the movie. I am curious to see if there is a Director's Cut of this that shows deleted scenes that work to make the turn not seem so gratuitous and lazy.
