They are a warrior race, so I think Nolan sees it as a honorable death for someone who was just serving the same empire that he was. He understood he had to die, but he also understood that he was dying for his empire.
I think it was a cathartic burial because he was laying his old self to rest more so than Conquest. Similar to Endeavor killing High-End during his Prominence Burn.
