Analysis: Echoes of the past in US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites
From CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh
Trump has clearly remembered his experience from the 2020 killing of Iranian Quds force commander Qassem Soleimani. At the time, the lethal US airstrike was considered unprecedented, even reckless, but ultimately, Iran had limited force with which to respond and its retaliation had minimal effect.
The US president’s decision to strike Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday underlines how weak Iran is militarily once again. After a week of trading blows with Israel, its missile stockpiles are depleted and less effective than perhaps some analysts had anticipated.
The White House may have assessed that Tehran now has fewer options to hit back at the US than they had back in 2019.
Geneva talks: And finally, this is a clear indication the US felt the time-consuming diplomatic efforts Iran had engaged with over past years were not worth repeating. Friday’s Geneva meeting with European leaders yielded few results; Trump likely felt altering the realities of Iran’s program on the ground was a safer, faster, and better bet.
The outstanding question now is whether these strikes have effectively ended what remains of Iran’s nuclear ambitions and curtailed its chances of a bomb. If the answer to this is not a resounding yes, then Trump has caused himself a significant new headache.
