Top Democrats on Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees call for de-escalation after US strikes on Iran​

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee and Sen. Jack Reed, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, are both calling for de-escalation after the US strikes on Iran.

“I strongly urge the Trump Administration to immediately pursue restraint, diplomacy, and international engagement to prevent further bloodshed,” Reed said in a statement. “Congress needs to be briefed in a classified setting. And I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure the American people get the facts and answers they deserve. It’s easier to start wars than end them. Even though the U.S. maintains military dominance, we are in a dangerous stage that could lead to significant instability in the region and beyond. We must be prepared for contingencies going forward.”

Shaheen said that “the United States must not rush into war with Iran,” and noted that President Trump “has not continued the bipartisan tradition of regularly briefing Congress on major national security events that impact Americans around the world.”

She added, “President Trump must now de-escalate tensions with Iran and immediately brief Congress.”

Netanyahu says there was ‘full coordination’ between the US and Israel​

The Israeli prime minister says the US strikes on Iran fulfilled a “promise” he made to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities when Israel first launched an unprovoked attack on that country more than one week ago.

“A short time ago, in full coordination between me and President Trump, and in full operational coordination between the IDF [Israeli army] and the United States military, the United States attacked Iran’s three nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan,” Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court over alleged war crimes in Gaza, said in a social media post.

“In doing so, the United States continued, with greater intensity and with great force, the attacks of the IDF and the Mossad on Iran’s nuclear program. This program threatened our very existence and also endangered the peace of the entire world.”

Iranian officials have repeatedly said Iran does not plan to develop nuclear weapons but will pursue its right to nuclear energy and research.
