Republican and Democratic members of Congress defend war powers resolution
From CNN's Aileen Graef
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna defended their efforts to reassert Congress’ authority over military action with a co-sponsored war powers resolution.
Massie called it an effort to “rein in the executive and reassert Congress’ authority, sole authority to declare war… and to engage or authorize the engagement of acts of war” in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the president’s actions in a social media post Saturday: “The President fully respects the Article I power of Congress, and tonight’s necessary, limited, and targeted strike follows the history and tradition of similar military actions under presidents of both parties.” But Massie called that a misinterpretation of the War Powers Act of 1973.
“There was no imminent threat to the United States, which was what would authorize that. And I think that’s peculiar to hear that from the speaker of the House. Look, Congress was on vacation last week when all this was happening… We haven’t been briefed. They should have called us all back,” Massie said.
The Republican congressman added that the US actions in Iraq and Afghanistan were “at least” debated in Congress.
“It should have been declarations of war, but at least they did an authorization of use of military force. We haven’t had that. This has been turned upside down, this process,” he said.
Khanna, meanwhile, said it was an “unfair smear” to call those who don’t support the engagement in Iran “isolationist.”
“First, let me just say that it’s a totally unfair smear to call people isolationist — the vast majority of Americans who don’t want more war and want diplomacy. Diplomacy and engagement is not isolationism,” he said.
