Pictures and video from Israeli military show US-made warplanes used to strike Iran ​

Imagery released by the Israeli military on Friday showed American-made F-35, F-15 and F-16 fighter jets were involved in the airstrikes on Iran.

Israel said 200 fighter aircraft participated in the strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, military sites and military leadership, using 330 munitions.

The 200 Israeli warplanes used make up almost 60% of the country’s combat-capable aircraft, according to statistics in the “Military Balance 2025,” published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

The US has long been Israel’s primary weapons supplier. The warplanes represent the breadth of US firepower, and all are in service with US forces as well as Israel’s.

The stealthy fifth-generation F-35 jets, made by Lockheed Martin, are the most modern in Israel’s fleet, and it operates 39 of them, according to the IISS statistics.

Israel has 75 of various models of the twin-jet F-15s, first made by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing) in its inventory, and almost 200 units of a range of F-16 models, originally made by General Dynamics and now Lockheed Martin, according to the IISS.

China says it opposes "infringement on Iran’s sovereignty"​

China is “highly concerned” about the “grave consequences” that Israel’s attack on Iran may bring, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

“China opposes any infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, and opposes actions that escalate tensions or expand the conflict. The sudden resurgence of tensions in the region is not in anyone’s interest,” spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters.

“China urges all relevant parties to do more to promote regional peace and stability and to avoid further escalation of the situation. China stands ready to play a constructive role in helping de-escalate the situation.”

Some context: China has been a key economic and diplomatic backer for Iran. It’s the largest buyer of Iranian oil and has repeatedly decried US sanctions on the country.

In 2023, Beijing wielded its increasing diplomatic clout to broker a rapprochement between bitter rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Beijing, together with Moscow, has repeatedly backed Iran at the United Nations. On Thursday, China, along with Russia and Burkina Faso, voted against a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency that declared Iran was not complying with its nuclear non-proliferation obligations.

The motion – put forward by the US, Britain, France and Germany – marked the first time the UN watchdog has passed a resolution against Iran in 20 years.

In March, China hosted Iranian and Russian officials for talks on Tehran’s nuclear program as US President Donald Trump pushed for a new nuclear deal with Iran. The three countries called for diplomacy over “pressure and threats” and an end to “all illegal unilateral sanctions” on Iran.

The following month, China’s foreign minister told his Iranian counterpart that Beijing supports Iran holding talks on its nuclear program with the US and opposes the use of force and “illegal” unilateral sanctions to resolve the issue.

IAEA chief says Iran's key nuclear sites have not been struck ​

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said three nuclear sites in Iran had not been impacted by Israel’s strikes, citing Iranian officials.

The Fordow, Isfahan and Bushehr sites have not been impacted, said the IAEA, adding its Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi had been in touch with Iranian officials.

The country’s largest nuclear site, Natanz, was confirmed hit, with videos and images showing plumes of smoke rising above the facility. No increase in radiation levels has been observed there, said the IAEA.

Fordow and Natanz are both underground facilities. Fordow is located some 20 miles northeast of the city of Qom, while Natanz is about 150 miles south of the capital Tehran.

Iran has spent years strengthening its nuclear structures against the threat of military strikes, which will make it difficult to comprehensively destroy them, military experts have told CNN.

The facilities use a specialized, hardened concrete – and some of the underground sites are connected to tunnels with 90-degree turns, adding another layer of complexity, experts said.

Merz had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday morning, and convened a meeting of Germany’s security cabinet, the chancellery in Berlin has said.

Merz reaffirmed Germany’s position that Israel has the right to “defend its existence and the security of its citizens” and stated that “the goal must remain that Iran does not develop nuclear weapons.”

“Iran continues to fail to fulfill its obligations to disclose its work on enriching nuclear-capable material,” Merz said, adding that it had “threatened to further accelerate uranium enrichment.”

“This nuclear program violates the provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and poses a serious threat to the entire region, especially to the State of Israel,” said the German leader.

Merz called for both sides to “refrain” from steps that could “lead to further escalation and destabilize the entire region.”

Global oil prices see largest single-day percentage increases in years​

Global oil prices have had their largest single-day percentage increases in years, reflecting fears that a wider conflict in the Middle East could lead to serious energy supply disruptions.

Brent crude, the global benchmark, was last up 4.3% at $72.4 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, jumped 5% to $71.4 a barrel.

According to Reuters, they are the biggest intraday gains for each benchmark since March 2022, a month after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The surge in the Brent price illustrates “both immediate supply concerns and a growing sense that negative headlines could extend the timeline for escalation unlike prior Israel-Iran episode,” Ahmad Assiri, research strategist at Pepperstone, a financial services firm, wrote in a research note.

In the equities market, US stock futures fell, sending investors retreating to traditional safe haven investments like gold. Dow futures dropped 1.3%, or over 540 points. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq Composite futures were down even more, by 1.4% and 1.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, gold rose about 1% to $3,413.6 per troy ounce.
