I agree that Nas never disrespected Pac, but if you listened to Noble (and Napoleon's) interviews - that wasn't the beef.Nas made no disrespectful references to Pac whatsoever (although personally, I think he SHOULD have checked Jungle behind the scenes and made sure Jungle didn’t make anymore crazy public gangsta claims) and Nas always seemed like he’s secure and honest in the stories he tells regarding his dealings with deceased legends like Pac, Big, and Pun. So I wouldn’t think Noble’s ramblings would warrant a response, ESPECIALLY if what you’re saying about him reaching out to EDI Mean and Napoleon before DRE dropped is true. Nas also has a somewhat more personal relationship with those guys that he’s never had with Noble. The diss didn’t make any waves beyond the day it was released and everyone, even Noble kind of swept it under the rug afterward. Just doesn’t seem like something Nas would bother with to drop a 16 over. This is in accordance with him ignoring disses from even slightly higher caliber artists over the years. If you’re not of the ELITE elite Nas ain’t bothering with you.
Sure, Noble was annoyed by the Hennessey line, but he doesn't have a right to since he didn't even know Pac at the time. What they took offense to was Jungle saying that the Outlawz "kept their heads down" when he and the QB cats first started shouting at down.
Before Noble lost his mind, he actually said that what REALLY happened is the "most gangsta version", which is that when Nas saw Pac/Suge and the goons immediately Nas walked up to them BEFORE all the QB/NY cats backed him up. So he doesn't understand where this "Outlawz kept their heads down" comment came from when it lessens how fearless Nas actually acted in the Outlawz version of events.
His, and Napoleon's, huge mistake was attributing that comment to Nas. When it was Jung who said it and Nas, who wasn't there, wouldn't know what really happened.
And again, I disagree about it not making waves when you had huge Westcoast cats who Nas respects all responding to it and basically telling Noble to chill the fukk out (which is what led to him leaving the Outlawz). From top of my head:
- EDI Mean immediately publicly told Noble to chill, even though he agreed that Jungle was out of line (leading to the Outlawz split).
- Napoleon agreed that Jungle and Nas lied, but said it didn't warrant the level that Noble took it to (which led to back and forths between the two). He also made the mistake of thinking it was Nas who either said it, or co-signed it.
- Spice 1 said Noble took it too far.
- Big Boi said it was insane.
- Reggie Wright said Noble was tripping.
These are cats that Nas either is aware of, or massively respects.
Cherry on top is that he mentioned Nas daughter, and like @spliz said there's two kinds of folk Nas always addresses - people who diss his borough and people who mention his mom or his daughter. I think that's basically why he said "I didn't intend to hurt you, but you crossed the line so I have to tear your head off now".
I think you're underestimating the legacy of the Outlawz a bit, and how connected they still are to both Nas and rappers he associates with.
I didn't really address it as it was happening, as a Noble fan it was CLEAR that he had completely lost his mind with this one. So I agree with you that it was unwarranted, and I agree with Nas (if it was at Noble) that he went hard on him. I felt pity for Young Noble more than anything, because I figured he was going through some personal shyt.
I actually think Noble is more worthy of a response than Jim Jones too.
