Mouthy PK Subban Should Let His Hockey Do The Talking

When PK Subban unleashed another monster of a slapshot at Jonathan Bernier, it would have been relief more than joy that the young defenseman experienced when the puck crept through the goaltender’s arm. The ‘Superman tug’ celebration had one message – “You may not like me, but I don’t care”.

A short time earlier, Subban had been embarrassed by James Van Riemsdyk. As a wayward pass set the two players on a collision course, Subban appeared to have a headstart before the red-hot Leafs forward burned past and slotted the puck between the legs of Peter Budaj. By the time Van Riemsdyk was on top of the goaltender, Subban could only weakly swing a stick.

Saturday night was a perfect screenshot of a season for Subban. As is so often the case, you couldn’t take your eyes of him, skating as he was like a waterbug from coast to coast, dropping the shoulder to outwit slower forwards trying to get in his way. And that slapshot, with its high, wheeling windup is a joy to behold.

But it was a trickier start for Subban as on his first shift he was driven into the boards by David Clarkson. His response, initially at least, was to chirp at the Leafs bench, something that ended up costing him rather badly the last time the Maple Leafs and Canadiens faced each other. That time, the defenseman’s jersey tug was mimicked by Van Riemsdyk as the latter put the game past Montreal with another goal.

Subban may have had the last laugh on this occasion, but it is a shame he allows his penchant for childish bickering to distract from his undeniable talent. At his best, Subban is completely and utterly enthralling, a weapon from the point and a skater of such speed and grace you’d be forgiven for thinking you were back at the Olympics watching the ice dancing.

At his worst he is a liability, something Mike Babcock clearly had in mind when he decided not to play Subban at in Sochi. Even his coach in Montreal can’t quite seem to work him out, playing him for monster minutes one game game and then giving him a severe benching the next.

He is young, and with youth comes both enthusiasm and naivety. Subban has, as yet, not seemed to grasp the fact that his attitude, whilst entertaining, serves mainly to encourage the opposition. There is a marked difference between an skilled agitator and someone with a big mouth – the master was Darcy Tucker, who would use chirp at players at the same time as pursuing them doggedly into the corners and playing an all round solid game.

Subban’s fallibility cost a goal from Van Riemsdyk last night, and arguably contributed to a Leafs victory the last time around. He would be an infiinitely more attractive player if he could reign in the nonsense and do what he does best in the offensive zone, whilst ironing out the weaknesses in his own end.

He made up for it last night with that cannon, and was helped by Phil Kessel’s glaring error in chipping the puck over the glass. The Leafs were sunk from the moment that puck dropped went over and Kessel knew it, by the way. Subban knew that on this occasion he had made it count, his first goal since January 14th. He is phenomenoal talent and one that would benefit from focusing his efforts a little more.

Bryzgalov to Wild is interesting as that was the rumored landing spot for Halak, if Sabres can't flip him that return for Miller looks significantly worse

islanders trying to get back the picks they gave up for vanek :mjlol:, edmonton did well fasth is a good goalie, i mean devan dubnyk got waived by nashville. Ducks will probably get vanek.


theres really no landing spot for halak plus they may only get like 5th or 6th rounder

Sabres already said weren't even dressing Halak. The message with that is he's going to be flipped to somewhere (probably to Washington) That might be the return though since the whole league knows he's getting dealt.
