Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend the daylight hours in a complete fast.

During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from all food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours (such as smoking or sex). Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking; it is a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-discipline and sacrifice.

Fasting during the month of Ramadan is considered one of the 5 Pillars of Islam -- five activities that shape a Muslim's life. Prayer occurs on a daily basis; pilgrimage is done once in a lifetime; charity and professing one's faith are both ongoing. Fasting the month of Ramadan is an annual observance; every year, Muslims take an entire month out of their lives to observe this strict fast and rededicate themselves to worship and faith.

Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives in light of Islamic guidance.

We are to make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends, do away with bad habits -- essentially to clean up our lives, our thoughts, and our feelings. The Arabic word for "fasting" (sawm) literally means "to refrain" - and it means not only refraining from food and drink, but from evil actions, thoughts, and words.

The physical effects of the fast are felt by Muslims as a reminder of those who suffer throughout the year -- those who are poor, homeless, refugees -- and who cannot meet their basic needs. It reminds Muslims not to be wasteful and to feel empathy for those who face hunger on a daily basis. We should feel gratitude for the bounties of Allah: clean water, sufficient healthy food, comfort of a home, health of our family members. There are so many in the world who must survive without these basic needs, and Ramadan is a time for us to give thanks and reaffirm our commitment to helping those in need.

During Ramadan, every part of our bodies must be restrained. The tongue must be restrained from backbiting and gossip. The eyes must restrain themselves from looking at unlawful things. The hand must give in charity, and not touch or take anything that does not belong to it. The ears must refrain from listening to idle talk or obscene words. The feet must refrain from going to sinful places. In such a way, every part of the body observes the fast.

Therefore, fasting is not merely physical, but is rather the total commitment of the person's body and soul to the spirit of the fast. Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint; a time to cleanse the body and soul from impurities and re-focus one's self on the worship of God and charity to mankind.

How much weight does a person lose on ramadan?

It depends breh :ld:

from between sunrise (3am) and sunset (9pm) you're not allowed to eat or drink,

but after the sun sets you can eat until the sun rises again like 9pm-3am

I've seen people actually gain weight during ramadan because they go HAM when breaking their fast :pachaha:

Fasting makes you much smarter (took a physiology course)

its because your brain can only use two forms of fuel, glucose (normal) and a special form of fat called ketogenic fats (only happens if you fast)

the keotgenic fats are never used because we eat too regularly, and evolutionary its because you want to be SMARTER, FASTER and more EFFICIENT if you are starving otherwise, you will fall into a negative feedback loop and die (less food means your brain has less glucose which makes it less efficient which makes you less efficient at hunting, which decreases your chances of getting food)

so our beautiful bodies are designed with a backup mechanism, where once we enter a fasted state we convert our fat cells with special enzymes into fuel for our brain which are much more powerful and allow us to think sharper, react faster and hunt better.

Obviously we arent hunting today but the effect still lasts.

When I was in college I took all my exams in fasted state, cant remeber ever scoring below a 90 :wow: :banderas: (of course i studied LIKE CRAZY beforehand too  )

I gain weight because I go to the gym and work out

most people gain weight if they binge eat afterwards (which you are not supposed to do)

but ramadan isnt about losing weight tbh, that neglects the true reward (inner peace, discipline and humility)

reminds me of a Verse that gives me chills

"and fast, it is better for you, if only you knew" [al-Baqarah, 2:184]

how could ANYONE have known that not eating and drinking for the entire day was GOOD for us back then, centuries ago???

truly the Word of God :wow:

Let's sacrifice the normal grace we get during the day from the sun then feast at night under the different light :blessed:

Don't underestimate the contribution of the moon to our piety

:blessed:

bismillahir rahmanir rahim

Are we not the consciousness and bearers of witness that nothing would exist if Allah didn't create it?

Even the power of the moon on us in all the boundless universe?

No one knows the true interpretation of everything but Allah

nothing has power besides Allah :blessed:

reminds me of a story

In the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a solar eclipse occurred. People superstitiously attributed its occurrence to the death of Ibrahim, son of the Prophet (peace be upon him). They said that Ibrahim’s death, which coincidentally happened in the same day of the solar eclipse, blocked out the sun.

What did the prophet (peace be upon him) say to them? The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) response was: “The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of someone's death or life. So when you see them, invoke Allah and pray

:wow:

this is what monotheism is all about brehs
