I'm in th process of making this sweater. And in one of the many facebook groups I'm a part of, I came across this. I NEED.

The woman that made it said she made the front part (black lives matter) herself, and I'm trying to buy some.

I own a serger

and this sewing machine

When I sew, I mainly use the serger, because it gives a clean finish. But when I make panties/undergamrnets, I need to use my sewing machine.

I have a curiosity. What's the best way to start? I want to make some dresses and they seem easy enough.
I'll answer this in the post I'm getting ready to make. @Fun Sized Psycho you can choose to add this to your OP if you want to.
@Vice Queen I crochet too. My mom thinks I'm an old lady with the hobbies I choose. Lol

the easiest thing (imo) to make is a maxi dress. There's only 2 pieces, a front and a back.
Do you know how to sew at all?
If not, this may be a good class Sew Confident: Essential Techniques for Beginners Class | Craftsy
I think if you don't have a craftsy account the 1st class is $15
(however, black barbie may have links to youtube videos that are free)

These two are mechanical sewing machines that I own, the bottom one is 42 years old (made in 1975, I found it in a thrift store).

Right now I'm working on a vintage skirt pattern

It should've come in a waist size 24, but it was a waist size 28 and I had to alter the pattern.

These are the black women on youtube I follow that sew.

Style Sew Me does have a tutorial on a maxi dress she made awhile back.

This is real simple. If you don't have a serger just use a zig zag or overcast stitch to finish your edges.

These aren't black youtubers, but they're still useful:

Another thing to keep in mind is that depending on your measurements, you'll need more or less fabric. Pattern sizes aren't the same as your ready-to-wear clothes (Old Navy, F21, etc.). I wear a pants size 0 in my ready to wear, however when looking for a pattern I look for a size 8.
I'll be adding more to this list so if you want to go ahead and add this to the OP.

Where do you get your fabric from? I end u buyig most of mine online, because I'm not near a Joanns, and walmart seems to be hit or miss with the apparel fabric. Are you only making dresses/skirts?

I go online or Joann, but I live in L.A, so there is a district for shopping for fabric although I haven't been yet, there seems to be a lot to choose from. Mimi G used to do a lot of videos for Michael Levine Fabrics (lowpricefabric.com). I've shopped from fabric.com, fabricwholsaledirect.com, and califabrics.com, I haven't tried etsy yet. I'm not going to only do dresses and skirts, but I'm planning on working my way into pants, shorts (for in the house only), and leggings. I'm really hoping I'll start diversifying it in 2018.

I don’t buy fabric from etsy. I get it from specific fabric companies. (Etsy shipping is kindif high imo)
Let me know if/when you want to do leggings. There’s a company that has a code for a free pdf. I don’t wear leggings, but a lot of people love the pattern.

Thanks. I don't own any leggings, surprisingly. Lol, that's also why I actually haven't bought any either. Something will be $30.00 and then shipping $25.00.
:leostare:. They don't even bother offering a coupon code either.

I have the first sewing machine you’ve listed.
