Iran knows in secret who the successors are. They have an assembly that is highly secretive and discusses these things. It's been reported as around 80 members of clergy, etc. but only a select few know the full list of candidates.

It's quite possible that they already know who is going to takeover vacant positions. The Persians are not cavemen. They are intelligent people.

They've already been in place running the country, the 86 year old figure head of their movement was not running the day-to-day of the country and making decisions though he'd have say and influence.

I think he has a better claim with the nonsense conspiracies about election interference, as far-fetched as those are.

Obviously the Trump Admin doesnt care about laws or precedents, but people will point out that Lincoln held an election during the Civil War.

Also had elections after the British burned down the White House, during both World Wars and 9/11.
