The original 150 also had some weird (Jynx, Pinsir), lazy (Grimer/Muk & Ditto, Voltorb/Electrode) and simple designs (most of the roster are just mutated animals) so it's not entirely new. I think a lot of people are just letting nostalgia get in the way.
Their gameplay/features now >>>> back then.
As for Ash I don't get why it's a problem he didn't age when in most cartoons the characters don't age and when one does (Rugrats comes to mind) they get shat on.
