It's called HIP HOP. It's a genre in which the culture is set up to nourish what is hip. That's why a lot of it is trendy. I don't listen to a lot of the new artists, but it's by design. There's people who are younger than me that love it. I can't rock with it because today's Hip Hop doesn't speak to me or even my generation.
The music from the 90's resonates because I was a part of the age group that Hip Hop targeted. The biggest difference between now and then is that a lot of the artists just seemed wise beyond their years. I think a lot of that had to do with them coming up in the '70's and the early 80's. They were exposed to some of the best music ever. This generation of artists didn't have that. We're in an era where everything is simplified. We're not going to get depth in an era where anything that can't be condensed into 140 characters is irrelevant. It's an era where #hashtags dominate. It doesn't even have to have much meaning, but it looks and sounds catchy so it trends because people latch on to it.
