Also, the FOOD supply chain in America is (for the most part) self sustaining for the essentials. Bread, Meat, Eggs. America makes that all on its own. Italy is the size of Florida. They simply don't have the land to make the sheer amount of shyt America does.
They and many other European nations are dependent on trade for a lot of their basic products. Part of why the Euro is so strong is free trade. However, it exposes what happens when you have to be cut off from the whole.
