Out here in the west his shyt wasn't poppin' at all but he had some minor play

Jay-Z was mostly known for doing those couple of songs with Foxy Brown until Hard Knock Life came out

I'm not from new York.

only got play because of the nutty professor? there were at least 5, technically at least 6 songs with videos from that soundtrack. can you name all of em?

so you thought it was foxy's song, even tho jay was the one with 2 verses?

and I guess none of you guys watched rap city back in the day, cuz he had 3 other videos that were all over rap city before makaveli dropped.

I think everyone did think it was a Foxy song tho. They only knew Foxy at that time; she had the buzz. Until the video dropped, people didn't even make the connection of that being the Dead Pres video dude. Remember, Dead Pres didn't get radio play..at least not here.

iLLmatic had crazy buzz and hailed as an instant classic out the gate it just some forget that it was heavily bootlegged which is why it sold 59k. iLLmatic only had 1 feature which was AZ who was a nobody. Nas wasn't riding famous rappers and singers coattails to get on like jigga did and Reasonable Doubt wasn't bootlegged like that. Nas iLLmatic was so influential that it birthed jigga's Reasonable Doubt.

And the Source also listed it as one of the best albums of 1996 in their '96 Year In Review issue (Jan. '97)

Wow such a dope year
some of my favorite 96 albums ain't on there

The 10 albums I bumped the most that year was

Pac - all eyes on me
Nas- it was written
Ghostface - iron man
Master P - ice cream man
Roots - illadelph halflife
Geto Boys - resurrection
Ugk - riding dirty
Ras Kass - soul on ice
Redman - muddy waters
Mop - firing squad

That Reasonable Doubt album was hard But all the albums mentioned above got more love from me in 96

I knew of the album and a few songs, but I wasn't a Jay Z fan back then. Something about his voice turned me off when I first heard him.

Reasonable doubt is a classic though.
