Old heads, is it true the '98 DMX is what killed the shiny suit era & forced Hov to change his sound?

I play Vol 2 more than 1 to be honestly

I did like Face Off with him and Sauce Money

I like Vol. 2 too, but some of the album sounds a little dated to me today.

But when it dropped, I played it crazily. Vol. 1 has some of Jay's most introspective sh*t, and some of his most lyrical joints. Away from the goofy sh*t on there, it was a top tier album for him.

Jay talking about shooting his bro in the shoulder was dark to me as a kid….

My own Dad looked at me like “U better not shoot your bro in the shoulder no matter how mad he gets”.

Money Cash Hoes sounds dated today.
Paper Chase too(For some reason, I thought that Lil Kim was on there as a kid)

Jay wanted to be Puff Jr though Vol 1

Juveniles 400 Degreez for me.If you're taking the mainstream/commercial route, it's X for sure.X was more popular. He had a meteoric rise.It was too easy for X.He was the perfect guy at the perfect time with the perfect style to run through all that terry cloth bullshyt.Def Jam was hip to the game and ran with it as part of their marketing strategy.
