Old heads, what was big and pac's presence in the music scene like when they were alive?

the mid-90s was the busiest time rap ever saw. stuff like this is why younger fans don't know chit and particularly, the reason why this board has been reduced to making the same threads about the same rappers over & over & over.

Even with all the quality artists of that time, big and Pac stood out from the rest...

Plus y'all gotta understand, those dudes were only 24 and 25 when they died, I believe that given another year of life, they would've made up and Pac I really think he was headed into that early Ye, fukk the establishment lets tear some shyt up zone. The government is glad he's gone.

When pac 1st debuted he was a nobody cuz Death certificate dropped a month before and that was the hottest album out at the time along with we can't be stopped by geto boys

Juice made pac more known that his music.Big was poppin from day one.Juicy got mad tick summer 94 and bigs debut album was highly anticipated

Big was the bigger star while alive(except for 96).Pac became bigger in death

So him winning 4 Source awards and being called the Best Rapper out in New York after "Ready To Die" didn't happen? Just cause Ghost Rae and Jeru were salty has nothing to do with how the public felt about Big. There was talk of NaS being the savoir after "ILLmatic" and that died when "It Was Written" came out. "Ready To Die" made Biggie the talk of New York which is why he had some emcees hating on him at the time. People love to bring up Ghost, Rae or Jeru but fail to mention the emcees like Meth and others who supported Big. Biggie collaborated with a ton of artist underground and commercial. Ghost, Rae and Jeru didn't speak for the rest of Hip Hop. Big had plenty of Love in New York.

Breh, there was alot of fukkery involving the 95 source awards. For instance, how is Big going to win album of the year over the person who the Source gave 5 mics? That inteself doesnt make any sense. I think NYC was just happy to have a NY artist selling records so they went overboard with the BIG accolades.

BIG was not getting anywhere near the kind of admiration from the people that you claim. There were plenty of people not really feeling the commercial vibe tha he was on at that time. It wasn't just Ghost, Rae and Jeru that were hating, there was a sizeable number of people who were not feeling his whole movement.

People forget that Pac's first two albums were not received with that much fan fare. He was at best a second tier rapper. It wasn't until Me Against The World when he dropped a very good album that he got the attention musically to match his notoriety in the media.

I would say a little before that. I would say that period between Poetic Justice and Thug Life were when he started to accelerate then Me Against the World was like the culmination of all that. But in comparison, Biggie was an instant star. While Wu-Tang and Nas sort of set the stage, Biggie, smartly used West Coast sensibilities in his music and cadence to make crossover hits especially in the case of 'Big Poppa' furthermore, Bad Boy marketed the dude very smartly, mobilizing a street team and getting Biggies freesstyles and stage performances and stuff on the radio. This is not to take away from Biggies, talent, but the marketing blitz was groundbreaking at the time, and he moved up very quickly through a crowded east coast music scene. Snoop also belongs in this conversation as well, because he too was an instant star.

Real talk.I copped both albums cuz I was a hip hop head who copped damn near everything and said the same thing.Nothin about pac stood out his bars were average and his delivery sucked

Me against the world definitely was his peak musically and was the album that made him a superstar even tho he was in jail that whole year until october

I disagree on both those, I though Pacs bars and flow were very good on his early stuff. It was the production that was so-so.

cats are going too far on both ends of the spectrum. BIG & Pac weren't the be all and end all of Hip Hop but they were far from local like some people are saying. there were bigger acts like Wu, Bone, Snoop, Cube, there were a lot of MC's we were listening to besides just Pac or BIG.
