I didn't really cared about 2pac he wasn't on my radar at that time. I knew of him from the Digital Underground group but didn't care much on his solo career.

when I think back to that time, I think that Pac was the biggest. AEOM was a big mainstream success and was hugely anticipated. Pac was starring in movies, and he was part of the hottest crew at that time(Death Row). B.I.G. was big in the hip-hop world at that time. He was great. A top M.C. that was earning respect as the best from Big Poppa and One More Chance. Both were big, but it wasn't cray like Pac was at that time. I would say, at that time, the Fugees and Nas were probably bigger than Biggie. And this was when Juicy was out. He got to that top level with Big Poppa and One more chance though. Makaveli was far more anticipated than Life After Death. But after Pac died, just that short little time before Big died, Bad Boy really blew up between Ma$e, Puff and B.I.G. If Pac was the superstar from 94-96, Bad Boy certainly took over in late 96 and 97. I still remember the first time I heard "Nobody can hold us down" and 'Hypnotize". So I think both were on top when they died, but Pac was huge at that time. Someone that everyone knew about before he died.

Both of them were the gods of rap
everyone took a back seat to them

this is the stuff I don't like.

that wasn't the case at all.

the mid-90s was the busiest time rap ever saw. stuff like this is why younger fans don't know chit and particularly, the reason why this board has been reduced to making the same threads about the same rappers over & over & over.

Pac was the man. He seem to be everyone in Detroit fav rapper after Me Against...

Big was prolly just as big after RTD

But after Pac accused Big of setting him up. Biggie got hate of epic porportions. Everyone seemed to turn on Big.

But to be honest while they were alive nobody were saying either were the best ever. Deaths blew both up big time. :yeshrug:

They were big but I dont know if they were THE biggest rappers on the scene from my recollection. Definetly in the 10 most recognizable rappers on the planet but like Snoop felt like he was biggest, then you had Cube, Bone Thugs, Dre, Wu, Redman, Busta, Nas (IWW era) and then from a mainstream standpoint you had like LL (Mr Smith album was pretty mainstream for him), Fugees, Cypress Hill, Coolio (he was a pop artist really)

I dont know I felt like Snoop might have been the hottest rapper during their era more than they were

Lmao at Coolio being bigger than Pac :duck:
gangstas paradise was a worldwide smash breh, was number 1 in US pop charts, Europe, Asia. everywhere. Pac and BIg were known by hip hop heads but they were not national or worldwide superstars, come on now. Pac was definitely rising very fast when he died though. but before that he was known more for his run ins with the law etc. i was into hip hop big time and didnt care too much for BIG. i liked him more in hindsight but the cats running rap back then was probally Snoop. Snoop was the biggest star in hip hop wordwide in the 90's/

It was pre-internet, pre-social media obviously.. Had the radio and television. and I'd say that post-prison Pac was the point that he became the stand-out. California Love? Poppin. Back when people bought music. 9 milli sold on All Eyez On Me? Anyone who says differently is out of their damn minds. As the entertainment industry goes, Pac and Biggie's war was blown out of proportion and got them both the legendary status from all the buzz. The public eye could taste the high tensions, and once Hypnotize dropped after both of them were gone, that G-Funk pushed Biggie over the top. As far as impact, I'd say it's much more impressive that Pac and Big were able to do what they did back then without the internet. I don't believe that half of the big names in the game today would have had as much success in that era (and not just because of music tastes), but because without the internet and the ability to broadcast at any time, they'd have had no chance. Plus, Pac and Biggie had polarized the East and West coast like never before. All eyes were on the two of them, and what they were going to do next. Their lives may have been cut short, but their legacies have an immortal impact on future generations of rap. Had there been highly accessible internet back then, I can't even begin to imagine how lucrative their buzz would have been. It was already big enough.

(And in the midwest, Biggie was seemingly more popular. I was a Pac fan.)

U need to learn how to read
Yes the 90s was the busiest and best time in rap
But biggie and pac were da top dogs
Partly because their beef, and mostly because they were so good
Thats why when they both died, hip hop started looking for people to take ova da throne (jayz dmx mase etc) and why even today, they are have become the measuring stick for all new (serious) rappers

speaking from a down south perspective only.......

Tupac was what Jay-Z is now.........
Big was what Nas is now.......

Pac embodied everything that Big didnt have.......
Big embodied everything that Pac didnt have.......

these two would be perfect for a group.......

But when they living career wise Pac ran circles around Big.....

you said "they were the gods or rap. everybody took a backseat to them".

and that really wasn't the case. I responded accordingly.

In the East Coast Biggie was one of the most popular at the time (along with Nas, Wu tang clan, etc). Pac was one of the most popular in the West Coast (way more than coolio breh :usure:)

They were big but I dont know if they were THE biggest rappers on the scene from my recollection. So far these responses are the closest to being the most objective. Only thing that I will add to these responses is that I believe that Ice Cube was overall bigger west coast representative over Pac and Snoop. Pac without a doubt became bigger after his death then he ever was alive. As the years have passed the fanatics have seemed to distort that part of history. I also disagreed when Sheek said Biggie brought NY back. The Wu as a whole was bigger then Biggie.....I know this because when Hoodshock came to Harlem in 96....Junior Mafia was 3rd to last..Fugees who were real hot at the time were 2nd to last and The Wu closed it out with violence arupting in the audience. When the announcer wanted order in the crowd before the show started he asked "Do ya'll wanna see the Wu?" and everyone went crazy cuz no one knew the wu was performing...He didnt ask if they wanted to see Biggie...He said Wu cuz he knew thats what would get the best reaction.....and Fugees were the headline yet Wu closed it out..
