I and most nikkaz (who were alive back then and aren't in this thread indulging in revisionism) thought nothing of it, as far as it pertains to Dre's rep or credibility. Because nobody was checking for Dre at the time of the Eminem signing. He was all but :flabbynsick: and had NO buzz for himself or any artists that he was or wasn't working with. Without the Eminem signing, he would've completely fell off the map. But you gotta hand it to him, nobody spots "talent" like Dre in this industry. Or has a knack for knowing what the average rap consumer wants to hear. Probably the single most influential man in rap history. The greatest & most innovative producer as well.

I think i'm older than almost everyone in this thread and honestly i can't remember anyone caring at all or even mentioning it really.

It is an interesting question. I already was starting to dislike most rap at the time so i wasn't feeling too much about it one way or another and it was already pretty commercial (which is what would have upset people if it was a few years earlier (probably not Em being white.)

But to answer your question I really don't remember anyone caring much.

Dre in 99 was pretty much Dame Dash status. Em pretty much saved his career.

This is true now that you mention it, I think Dre was just coming off that weak Aftermath compilation around that time right?

Everyone was already aware of Eminem from his battles and underground work. We knew Em was nice already. I also knew Dre had a huge draw on his hands.

This, I was already well aware of dude before Dre, and A lot of people really didn't know, or care what he was doing post Death Row at that point, the em signing was something to actually pay attention to.

The "my name is" video threw me off though because I saw it for the first time late night, blowed/drunk, kinda fukked my head up. I'm like who the fukk is that?

:what:

I didn't "get it" til the titles and shyt came up at the end of the video

Yea that was my first thought...i'm like "old heads", i'm thinking we gonna be talking about someone from the 80-'s

I guess I underestimated my :flabbynsick:-ness

...but Marshall was aight. Then "Role Model" dropped, and I got it.

Yea Role Model sealed that shyt for me as far as "oh yea he's going to blow", that my name is shyt was a fluke.

It was great for visuals but it wasn't raw like that which is why I didn't immediately know it was him on first listen.
