Guards:
Laken Tomlinson -
After being somewhat of a disappointment in Detroit. Laken Tomlinson was given a second chance after we traded him for a 5th rounder. Despite struggling initially during the season. While I don't think he is built to be a great pass blocker (has bad feet and struggles to block in space) he is a very good run blocker and is a scheme fit due to his athleticism, strength and his ability to make playes at the line of scrimmage and block linebackers at the second level. Ideal for a zone blocking scheme. He was rewarded with a nice but reasonable contract which keeps him on the team the next 3 seasons. Barring injury he should be our starting left guard.
Grade: B-
Jonathan Cooper -
Another failed first round pick. Jonathan Cooper is still working his way back from knee surgery. Despite being a journeyman Cooper has considerable starting experience and is in play for the starting right guard spot. It will likely be between him and Joshua Garnett who is also rehabbing. If Cooper should lose to Garnett he still has utility as a backup.
Grade: C+
Joshua Garnett -
A 2016 draft pick from the Baalke era. His injury last year may have been a blessing in disquise. His playing career has been unrrmarkable and that is not what you want out of a 1st round pick. After looking soft and slow, he has spent last year transforming his body to fit Kyle's blocking scheme by losing about 20 lbs and then bulking himself back up. This guy is something of a wild card, he should beat out Jonathan Cooper for the right guard spot but if he doesn't he will likely be used a trade bait or cut. Due to his youth he could be an asset to a team looking for a power blocking guard.
Grade: C+
Mike Person - A former practice squad/reserve member. Mike Person has had a nice career staying in the league. He was signed to back up the guard spot but he also has experience at center.
Grade: C
Alan Knott -
A center from South Carolina, despite having very good sophomore and junior years. He regressed as a senior. Despite this, he has the skillet to be a good devlopmental guard/center. He fires through blocking assignments and shows good leverage albeit a little undersized. I think he makes the practice squad.
Grade: D-
JP Flynn -
Just signed with Jamar MgGloster cut but this guy is a long shot. Despite being a very high IQ player in Montana State. He has NFL size but he is a marginal athlete and unless he drops 15-20 lbs, works on bending his knees at a 3 point stance and works on getting to the 2nd level consistenly, he doesn't have much of a future.
Grade: F
Unit Analysis:
I think the guard play last year was below average. With that said we shed veterans with the idea of getting young athletic guys who fit the offense we're trying to run. There will be some growing pains but there is a lot of upside, even if we should have grabbed a lineman in the mid-late rounds of the 2018 draft, a lot of talent fell.
