Guards:

Laken Tomlinson -

After being somewhat of a disappointment in Detroit. Laken Tomlinson was given a second chance after we traded him for a 5th rounder. Despite struggling initially during the season. While I don't think he is built to be a great pass blocker (has bad feet and struggles to block in space) he is a very good run blocker and is a scheme fit due to his athleticism, strength and his ability to make playes at the line of scrimmage and block linebackers at the second level. Ideal for a zone blocking scheme. He was rewarded with a nice but reasonable contract which keeps him on the team the next 3 seasons. Barring injury he should be our starting left guard.

Grade: B-

Jonathan Cooper -

Another failed first round pick. Jonathan Cooper is still working his way back from knee surgery. Despite being a journeyman Cooper has considerable starting experience and is in play for the starting right guard spot. It will likely be between him and Joshua Garnett who is also rehabbing. If Cooper should lose to Garnett he still has utility as a backup.

Grade: C+

Joshua Garnett -

A 2016 draft pick from the Baalke era. His injury last year may have been a blessing in disquise. His playing career has been unrrmarkable and that is not what you want out of a 1st round pick. After looking soft and slow, he has spent last year transforming his body to fit Kyle's blocking scheme by losing about 20 lbs and then bulking himself back up. This guy is something of a wild card, he should beat out Jonathan Cooper for the right guard spot but if he doesn't he will likely be used a trade bait or cut. Due to his youth he could be an asset to a team looking for a power blocking guard.

Grade: C+

Mike Person - A former practice squad/reserve member. Mike Person has had a nice career staying in the league. He was signed to back up the guard spot but he also has experience at center.

Grade: C

Alan Knott -

A center from South Carolina, despite having very good sophomore and junior years. He regressed as a senior. Despite this, he has the skillet to be a good devlopmental guard/center. He fires through blocking assignments and shows good leverage albeit a little undersized. I think he makes the practice squad.

Grade: D-

JP Flynn -

Just signed with Jamar MgGloster cut but this guy is a long shot. Despite being a very high IQ player in Montana State. He has NFL size but he is a marginal athlete and unless he drops 15-20 lbs, works on bending his knees at a 3 point stance and works on getting to the 2nd level consistenly, he doesn't have much of a future.

Grade: F

Unit Analysis:

I think the guard play last year was below average. With that said we shed veterans with the idea of getting young athletic guys who fit the offense we're trying to run. There will be some growing pains but there is a lot of upside, even if we should have grabbed a lineman in the mid-late rounds of the 2018 draft, a lot of talent fell.

Unit Grade: C+

Random thought. I wonder what could have been had we kept Vance McDonald. I was talking to my brother in law who is a Steelers fan and he's excited about him this upcoming season. He balled out vs the Jaguars in the playoffs.

He would of been the same athletic stone hand te he has always been. Vance McDonald should never be in a what if scenario, he will always have 3-4 games that will have you all :ohhh: and then turn you back to :gucci: for the rest of the season. Of course steelers fans are excited but they will learn how inconsistent he is soon enough.

our defense is going to be a lot better than people realize, their is going to be a lot of coverage sacks which is going to help our pass rush. Also our wr core is going to be a lot better than people realize

He's a far better fit in their system than ours and he may have been the victim of shytty QB play because he caught most of the balls thrown his way in Pittsburgh.

Unless somebody does something off the edge the defense won’t fully mature

Centers

Weston Richburg -

Arguably the best free agent pickup of thjs season. After spending the last 4 seasons in Big Blue he joins the Scarlet and Gold as a top 5 center in the league. Equally good in pass sets or run blocking he also makes great line calls and has the athleticism to consistently impact the 2nd level. Some people are a little concerned because he sat out last season with a concussion but I think it was the Giants being overly cautious. Either way he is an elite center.

Grade: A

Erik Magnuson -

UDFA from 2017. Though he is listed as a guard. They were giving him snaps as a center during minicamps and looks to be the primary backup which is pretty impressive considering he has the size of a tackle (6'6). It seems to me that the coaching staff values versatility as he can line up anywhere on the line.

Grade: C+

Unit Analysis:

Richburg is an elite center and one that could be the foundation of an offensive line for years. Magnuson is an impressive prospect considering his humble beginnings. The guards on either side have no excuses not to perform.

Defensive Line

DeForest Buckner -

After making an immediate impact his 1st two years in the league, this should be Buckners break out year. He brings a rare combination of strength and speed and attacks opposing offensive linemen with violence. Despite only getting 3 sacks he was a league leader in QB pressures and he has beem working on his game in the offseason. This man is great and will one day stand amongst the league's elite.

Grade: A

Arik Armstead -

Another 1st round defensive line pick, most of Armstead's career has been hampered by injuries. Despite that his 5th year option has been picked up and I believe he will at least have this season to prove himself. I have high expectations of him this season as so far he hasn't lived up to his draft grade even when healthy. Still he is young and has high upside.

Grade: B

Solomon Thomas -

The #3 pick of last years draft. Thomas had fairly unremarkable season. If you remember last year, I thought he was overdrafted and if he was our guy we could have traded back farther and stull landed him most likely. He is a good run stopper but he gets swallowed up at times in pass rushing situations in part because he is little undersized. He does show impressive burst off the line and I think a season in the NFL would help with his strength. I'll expect a lot better from him this season.

Grade: B

Earl Mitchell -

A 7 year NFL veteran. Earl Mitchell is your ever reliable interior defensive tackle. Albeit better suited as a nose tackle he has performed well as a 1 technique. A very good run stopper and an adequate pass rusher, I think we run with him this season and then move on from there as he turns 31.

Grade: B-

Jeremiah Attoachu -

A cast off from San Diego. He had some nice games there but was casualty of Joey Bosa and crew. He is essentially replacing Elvis Dumervil but I question dumping a proven veteran for a less proven guy because of age. But he could find a career resurgence here.

Grade: C

Ronald Blair -

2016 5th round pick. Ronald Blair has developed into a nice rotational piece and special teams player. He missed a chunk of last season due to injury but I expect him to maintain his spot, this year.

Grade: C-

Kentavius Street -

Rehabbing from a torn ACL. He won't see the field until next year. While I think he was over drafted. Scout say he had freakish physical attributes and some had a 2nd round grade on him. We're set at D-line so we can afford to take a training table redshirt.

Grade: INC

Sheldon Day -

A former 4th round pick from Jacksonville. His career has been a disappointment. He has great technique as a pass rusher but his build is really that of an interior defensive tackle but he lack the size or strength to that guy. He can play on sub packages though. He is also a high character guy too.

Grade: D+

Will Sutton -

See Sheldon Day. Same player really. Lynch likes his tweeners.

Grade: D+

Cassius Marsh -

NFL journeyman. His pedigree got him overdrafted. Cassius Marsh is too small to really be a major part of a defensive line rotation but he contributes in special teams and as an emergency defensive end.

Grade: D+

DJ Jones -

Primarily a depth special teams player, there is a chance he could groom himself to replace Earl Mitchell but that is a long shot.

Grade: D

Julian Taylor -

Practice squad candidate selected in the 7th round. He brings impressive length but he needs to pack on 20 lbs at minimum and maintain his athleticism to have a future in the NFL..

Grade: F

Unit Analysis: We spent 3 first round draft picks on our starters. No more training wheels. Pressures must become sacks. We have nice youth and depth but it starts with our big 3. Thomas, Armstead and Buckner.

Unit Grade: B+
