nikkas see guys on other teams get their roles maximized by good coaching and think that happens in new york :laff:
if you think vanvleet will have near the same level of efficiency in new york....or his defense will look as good considering we have a fleet of players on the second line behind him that would be undisciplined young players.....:mjlol:
it's easy for vanvleet to be an agressive defender when you got OG, pascal, ibaka, marc gasol behind you.
at the end of the day he's a small guard. his level of impact is limited unless he becomes the second coming of isiah thomas or chris paul.
On the wrong team vanvleet could top out as a DJ augustine type. which isnt bad....but it isnt 25 million dollars good.
This is fair. But we’re banking on a new culture with this new coaching staff. If this was still Fizdale i would agree with you 100%. But a Thibs coached team with FVV, Frank, RJ, Insert stretch 4 and Mitch is a VERY solid defensive team. Obviously they won’t be a top 5 defense like Toronto was but we can be a top... 15-18 defense? That’s a huge fukking improvement.

Eh, role players start too. I guess your advocating for something between role player and star player which i agree, i feel there needs to be a distinction. But VanVleet isn’t going to be someone who is going to score 25 a night and be the focus of your team. he will also contribute significantly to your team competing each night in many different ways so who knows.
It’s not about starting. He’s not a role player.

His statline was not that of a role player. What he does night in and night out is beyond that of a “role player”. If he was a lottery pick from Kentucky he would never be called this.

Why isn’t Siakam called a “role player”? Why is Siakam categorized as a rising star and compared to people like Tatum? He’s the same as VanVleet and had a similar pathway to the league through G-League and hard work. They’re the same age.

Guess who had the higher box plus minus, value over replacement, win shares out the two? VanVleet did.

Dragic, Bledsoe, McCollum, Rozier, Russell, just throwing some names out we call these role players? :mjlol:

I think McCullum and Russell are stars. Those other guys I’d categorize as role players tho. Again, i actually agree with you but we don’t have another title for that player that’s not a star but contributes a lot.... second and third options?

For all you dudes taking a stand at "I refuse to overpay for FVV," take a look at the current guard contracts in the league and ask yourself if this is a line worth standing on

NBA Active Player Contracts

If you think dude is worse than a bunch of dudes getting paid 21m or less then cool
Exactly. I feel like guys are stuck in the 2014 era salary cap scale. The price of the brick been up...

VanVleet was better than McCollum last season.

Outside of pure scoring he’s a more impactful player in general.

Dragic is closing games for Miami in the playoffs outplaying the “star” Jimmy Butler why is he a role player?

Cause he can’t do it for a sustained period of time? Idk. I’m willing to accept that FVV is on his way to star player tho. At just 25 he’s not even at his prime yet and can still improve. shyt if he can just create what he did in TOR, in NY we’ll make him a star.

Unless you’re saving cap space to take on bad contracts that include assets and picks there is no reason to be cheap and not spend money.

Ain’t like we getting max players, so go ahead and spend 18-22 million a year on FVV. I see nothing wrong with a 4yr deal with the 4th yr being a team option.

But the best trade rumor I’ve heard for a few weeks is that suns wanna trade oubre and the 10th pick. We need to be all up on that, I would love to have the 8th/10th pick in the draft, we can go with a safe pick and a reach possibly like cole.

The suns want to trade down to open up cap space to chase after FVV or BI. So they got to be careful if the goal is to go after FVV. In fact that reason alone is probably why the Knicks aren’t all over that deal.

Y’all better be happy if we get FVV and not another year of Eldrid Payton. We’re arguing as if we’re in a position right now to get top tier free agents. We are basically looking for rebounds and drunk leftovers at the club.
Getting Dubious and Elfrid out needs to be a top priority :camby:
