Compared to Nas/Wutang, Jay Z Biggie and others. Was he viewed as a pure NY rapper ? Doesn't really seem to give off those vibes too much, there's a certain aesthetic that 90s new york nigggas had and Darkman X kinda differed from that image and went deep into a grimey hardcore sound.

But what do I know ima gen Z nikka.

He was late 90s
his NYC comp was Puffy, Mase, Jay, and Ja Rule. They don't really fit that traditional NYC mc vibe either. Puff and Mase in particular was being criticized for their sound and aesthetic. So in that context DMX sound was respected from the gate. The dog barking set him apart but the continuous string of hits really solidified his credibility

From a non New Yorker perspective would say most anyone fukking with some combination of Jay, Nas, Wu, Mobb Deep, Bad Boy, Big Pun and artists like that was fukking with DMX for sure

But would also say 98-99 especially DMX had a wider reach than most, the aggression of his style attracted a lot of rock and metal kids who was casual rap fans at best, and a lot of dudes who didn't fukk with New York hip hop like that made an exception for DMX

He was the epitome of NY his whole steez was NY....but he was also bigger than NYC at the same time. Could've claimed the King status if he was so inclined. From 98-01 there wasn't anyone bigger not even Jay
