I think what did separate X a lot from the others is his production was so different. The Swizz Beatz and even Dame Grease and P Killer to an extent, had a much different sound that didn't match really with traditional NY rap. X's content was also a little bit more vulnerable than most NY rap at the time. I said it before, but there's no album that sounds like It's Dark and Hell is Hot. Before it or after. It's really a very unique project, from a sonic and lyrical perspective. It really differs from even other hardcore acts you may associate X with like Onyx.

X's sound did stray from traditional "NY Boom Bap" sound when he blew up. A lot of "real heads" used to shyt on Swizz casio sounding beats.

Album is 1 of a kind like u stated. I was at the age where that was probably the first classic I got to experience in real time where it really impacted me. Always gonna have a special place in my heart

I wish grease and P had more work. I was excited when dame started fukking with max and French. They made some shyt for what it was.

DMX legit scared me when I first heard him. Although everyone was talking gangsta shyt, I felt that DMX was not bullshytting. And I have always been critical of gangsta rap even though I love a lot of it.

Fast forward to today. The so called rappers are literally active gang members who kill one another for sport. And broadcast the details all over social media and their so called music.

As for DMX the brutality he portrayed made it hard for me to listen. Not to mention prison and other rape threats.

He has top notch rap skills tho. I love a few of his songs.

Bronx people revered X. I think Mt. Vernon being a powerhouse earlier in the decade made it easier to not feel territorial about Yonkers rappers poppin off and X offered up an energy we didn't get. Hov is amazing but he's always been boujee at heart, so when X blew up, he was the guy you were gonna ride with. We were running low on local rappers who had the sort of connection that was gonna make you ride for anything he did. SI had Wu-Tang. Queens had Nas, but some of the other rappers (Hov, Mase, Kim, Foxy, etc.) didn't stick to your rib the way X did.

and you anticipated his features after 4,3,2,1. He coulda read the alphabet but with his energy, the alphabet woulda sounded hard.

The first time I heard DMX was on Lox “Money Power Respect” or Mase 24 hours to live
But when he came with this he brought the streets back. The game was all flossy and shiny suit. DMX was the streets if he never dropped his first album Puff would’ve kept remaking songs.
