Do young people even realize that "The Message" is probably the most important rap song ever made?? I mean it singlehandedly transformed the way other MCs rapped. Before that rap didn't really tread on social messages...of course the delivery/flow sounds dated but if u just strip the lyrics of that song what they're saying is incredible. And big Sean better than Rakim???????? Big Sean himself would slap u for saying that... U do realize any rapper that is considered lyrical, for instance TI as u mentioned, is literally in some way shape or form a son of Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick, etc right? 
IMO jay-z is one of the most influential rappers of all time n he wouldn't be who he is without Big Daddy Kane...he's basically the guys reincarnation (he also learned from BIG, who is also heavily influenced by Kane) ...Oh u think Kendrick is dope? He uses a multi syllable /lyrical style that he probably was inspired by dudes like Eminem (since he's around my age) who in turn learned what he knows from Kool G Rap/Rakim/Kane. Are u following this? I'm not some old head , I'm 25 n like u when I was in high school I thought the same thing about 80s rappers, until I actually listened to them n realized I was completely wrong. Rakim is nicer than Sean because he is a much more technically advanced MC than Sean is. He has a better flow than Sean has. Sean is one of the most overrated and mediocre rappers that I've ever heard. He spits some of the most simplest bars ever and is overall a generic hack.
Big Sean himself would smack you for trying to throw Rakim under the bus because Rakim is in the top 10 of Big Sean's Top 10.
I mean, this isn't even a generational thing, people were saying that Nas had surpassed Rakim in the 90s. There are rappers out there, even now that I think have built on the legends did and went further.
