It's very loosely based on a novel by Thomas Pynchon, Vineland. Which is basically about revolutionary hippies in the 1960s who do a bunch of wild shyt before the feds resume hunting them in the 1980s. The director has said he ultimately did his own thing instead of directly adapting it, but just based off the trailers there are similarities (the daughter, karate, etc). Those characters are white in the novel. So this isn't some statement on black revolution as much as it's a modern take on an aged revolutionary and his daughter being hunted for shyt he did in the past. Looks like they simply removed the hippies, rock n roll, and drug sales from the novel and replaced it with black power stuff.

Nah I get that, was just more so calling out the common troupe of No Black Men/No Black Couples lol. Like this would have been just as effective with Leo being with a woman of any race as Leo is Leo, which is why I kinda turned that part of my brain off and just going in to see a good movie.

Gotta remember Paul is married to a biracial woman/loves black women.

Leo is more simping for Teyana Taylor than all in on the cause.

I do wonder if there were black men/women/couples with the varied layers you see from David Fincher, Quentin, PTA, Wes Anderson, but from black directors, would it make seeing the lack of blackness in white films that much disappointing.

The closest might be Steve McQueen. Shame & 12 Years a Slave had some incredible perspectives. Moonlight is another one but overall I question if its an issue with lack of actual good writers/directors compared to the white counterparts or just not being given the opportunities.

its a complicated convo to be honest.
Do I want to see the Black woman and Mixed girl lose out on a role that helps them feed their fam? No
Do I want to see a Black man forced into a role just to feel good? fukk no
But at some point we can't ignore the trend lol, Black Men and women can't lead a film without it being deemed "a black movie" and usually the Black Man will just not exist in the film if he isn't the lead with a non black woman, while the Black woman will be the love interest or the "strong stoic asexual all knowing" black woman (this replaced the magic negro trope of the past).

Like I said I fukk with Leo so I was in, but I found myself getting annoyed during the trailers.

I just got back from the 930 show. Dope film that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but that mf is too goddamn long. fukk!! That shyt is damn near 3 hours and it's not even necessary for it to be that long.
One thing that was pointing out in the film is that no matter how pro black and down for the cause these mfers seem, they gonna snitch when they start throwing decades at them and getting family members involved. Everyone was ratting in this movie

I felt uneasy with a lot of the cop scenes and the white supremacist group

-rolling out Beverly Hills on the wheelchair and the cops harassing her.

-Cop shooting ole girl in the grocery store

-white supremacist describing a mixed race child

-“Sounds like a black girl name” “I love black girls “
I mean ..you weren't supposed to feel easy about those things right?
