I may be in the minority here, but after the credits rolled I felt this to be a bit overrated. I mean the acting was solid, but the story didn't need to be drawn out for nearly 3 hours without exploring more characters like Deandra and Sensi Sergio. Especially when 30 minutes is spent on a car chase and another 30 minutes is spent on Leo tryna charge a phone and remember a password. Teyana was alright, but like ASAP in Highest 2 Lowest she was kinda overacting in some scenes. I guess PTA told her to go full Queen Latifah in Set It Off since they even shouted it out. Didn't care much for Bob or even Lockjaw. Both characters were idiots. I wonder if Penn playing the crackhead Dad and Leo the villain would have been better. Seeing Leo smoking crack, you already knew he wasn't saving shyt. The kids jumping across buildings scene made no sense when the distance between the buildings changed right after he falls. Young mixed girl did her thing and was letting off them shots like her Mom. That was a highlight. Those other school kids couldn't act for shyt. Some lines felt like pandering. Leo yelling to Teyana "of course I love fukking black girls. What the fukk do you think I'm doing here?" and that old ass rich cac saying "Our job is to find haters and stop them" made me cringe. Regina and Benicio did great. Wish they showed what tf happened to their characters. They wasted Wood Harris. Gonna wait for streaming to decide if this makes my top 5 of the year. For now I give it a 7/10.

I liked the movie. Sinners still my movie of the year though.
Penn’s character isnt a self hater its more of the dehumanizing and degenderizing of black bodies. Black people arent human in their lens just sexual objects. Im the manner white men obsess over black male bodies but dont consider themselves gay because black males are not human nor men in their view. Its why his angle had a homoerotic thing going
That Sean Penn character reminded of that storyline of when Kurt Angle wanted to fukk Booker T's wife. :mjlol:

What stood out on second watch:

1. I watched this with 3 black women this time around. Just to preface. That being said, I really didn’t like Perfidia. I didn’t like her the first go round. You’re not supposed to like her. But on second watch, she’s just bad on all fronts. Her and “Jungle p*ssy” are really jarring. Oversexualized, loud, abrasive. The women I watched the movie with were
viscerally annoyed by the characterizations. didnt like that. I don’t think Teyana really did anything to improve her stock as an actress. Her 3 minutes of postpartum was good, but other than that, she really was just an object. Just an overly horny, hothead, rat.

2. The first 30 minutes flows like water. The 30 minutes before the timeskip is just masterfully done. The score sets the tone immediately

3. Honestly funnier the second time. Leo and Sean Penn are funny as fukk. The random side characters are all pretty hilarious. Like Willa’s friends are all ugly as sin and all the background characters sound like they were pulled from the set of Napoleon Dynamite. The “reverse rape” “semen demon” scene is a riot. On second watch, the comedic flair really stands out imo.

4. The very end scene is the worst scene in the movie. Bob having a cell phone, Willa reading the note from her mom and now being an activist. Her overall reaction to the note. Pefidia even being able to get a letter to them somehow. Just going back to there normal lives with no fear or knowledge of the Christmas Adventurers. Seems like a scene that should’ve been thought through more or edited out imo

5. Did not like how they did Deandra. At all. Or the rest of the military. They just disappear after Bob runs after Lockjaw and Willa.

Overall, the movie held up well on second viewing. One of the best tempoed movies I’ve ever watched. I could’ve easily sat through another 30 mins. It’s not without its flaws but a highly enjoyable movie. I’m sad it’s not doing numbers cause it’s a lot more accessible than ppl realize

with item 1, I saw it solo so good to hear you with some women who saw the bullshyt too lol. I think their characters were more satire, which is why dudes talking about the daughter "fighting the good fighter" and continuing the legacy is weird because her mom was a Wench and a Rat who's activism seemed more like entertainment/a video game for her. This is why I said I wish they made Regina and Wood married/a couple to show the parallel of real activitst and the folks looking for purpose who really in over their head like Leo and Teyana

That lite brite reminds me of that one chick from game of thrones. Cute.

Also I checked. This is a no Hansen statement () even though she played a high schooler.

Not saying in quality...Although there have been those on social media who made that comp ironically.

Just in terms of a director being due. Is it outrageous if someone still favors Boogie Nights/TWBB/The Master?
I like Oppenheimer as a better comp for that. This will be on a lot of folks’ top 3 PTA lists. Marty won an Oscar for a film that doesn’t come close to scratching the surface of his stacked filmography.

For the last bit of point four, I think they were basically alright because there wasn't anyone left to actually care. Everything was built around Lockjaw trying to join the CAC. The raid on the city was cover for him to find Willa, and the CAC assassin was only out there because they didn't want Lockjaw to join and ruin their reputation. They killed Lockjaw, and the only person they would've had to tell them about Willa and Bob was Lockjaw himself. As far as he knew, she was dead after he handed her over to the bounty hunter, and he really only seemed to have a passing interest in killing Bob due to his weird jealousy over him having a relationship with Perfidia, so he had no reason to direct the CAC at them. Seeing as, at least as I interpreted it, one of the main themes was how self-absorbed some of the characters were, it's completely feasible that they just weren't a priority for anyone after everything.
