Why a mf gotta sound like they bout to die singing to be considered a great vocalist .. wtf that’s retarded. I don’t understand that line of thinking. So beyonce gotta simulate labor pains on stage on some “it’s ripping my soul apart to get through this song” to make us feel something.. is pain the only emotions? What about the other feelings that her singing expresses.. joy, rage/anger, euphoria.. nope jus agony and heartbreak..
Man fukk all that.We know what Whitney was capable of when she got up on that stage.She was spilling over with soul & charisma.Anybody standing next to her was in trouble.If anything, her record label/handlers watered her down in the 80's.They tried to make her too wholesome when Whitney was a real one.She should've snatched the mic from Clive, loosened her collar, and had a real nicca moment like Eddie Cane in the 5 Heart Beats.I think it was a bit far fetched and hyperbolic to say we were not fukking wit Whitney prior to the 90’s, but with that said, the response she received at the 1989 Soul Train awards was not that far off the mark as well. I can safely say I heard my parents play way more Anita, Patti, Stephanie Mills, Sade and etc in the 80’s than Whitney. Her talent was acknowledged, but some did feel her music was too ‘glossy’ and whitewashed back then
Everybody knew Whitney could sing her ass off. That has NEVER been up for debate. But let’s put it like this. I was way more likely to hear her music at the dentist office than at a cookout. I don’t remember anybody ever saying let’s listen to I Wanna Dance With Somebody or Be My Baby Tonite. I'm just comparing marketing approaches & career paths.To me, MJ, Bey, and Madonna are at the top of the pyramid when it comes mainstream plastic acts.They're the 3 giants.Especially Madonna.More spectacle than substance.Mikes the GOAT of it.I have the strongest connection with him due to nostalgia, so it pains me to say that.Regardless, he's the GOAT.Thriller will probably cross my mind right before I die.So now she’s like Madonna when you just called her the female MJ in another post
Why can’t she just be Beyoncé? Say what you want about her but she’s been the standard in her profession for two decades. Is she the best vocally? Of course not. But she’s an amazing singer in her own right and is one of the goat artists
