One Piece doesn’t really hit it’s stride until the Alabasta Kingdom arc. It’s pretty much fire with a few weak spots from then on

the world building and characters from page 20 randomly come back in page 650. Like wtf?! That nikka was mid but he a warlord now. How?!

Watching early One Piece now can be daunting in 2021 since so many current anime have taken pieces from it and present it with modern animation.

It's the GOAT shounen though off the world building, characters, and attention to detail. Plus with the events of the current arc it's better than it's ever been imo which is crazy for a 20+ year story.

Breh said he's alternating between reading and watching, I can't fathom doing that with anything and enjoying it.

Anyway, GOAT Piece is the best Shounen ever, but the series is best experienced just going in and take it for what it presents rather than try to judge it by that measure.

Its status has accumulated over the years through its dedication to world building and continuity. You mention Wapol and Mr 3. Guess what? Those guys still show up and have a place in the world after 1,000 chapters. Any other series would have long moved past them and forgotten them, but Oda finds a purpose for them still. And not in an oppressive 'Geez, he really brought that guy back?' way that takes up a ton of story time, but to remind and show you that even though Luffy and crew are the protagonists, the characters in the world still move on their own.

Once that clicks you'll realize One Piece has built the most expansive and complete world in all of Shounen. And the attention to detail, the throwbacks to and comebacks of everyone that passes through this world is on another level entirely.

I'm alternating between reading and watching
I'm on the 80s of the anime
Waffle gets hit by Dalton, then dudes in Doctor outfits rush out and patch him up

I'm enjoying it enough to watch but this shyt is overhyped

And after shyt like AoT and My Hero Academia I'm spoiled, I hate arcs that go on too long
Number 3 the wax and his giant spinning candle of doom was dumb fukkery

If you're enjoying it, then its hitting the way it should. OP doesnt go for early flash and tryhard manufactured "epic moments" like its successors. Just builds on its world and organic moments that become iconic like the walk to AP. now fans lose their shyt every other week from callbacks, fights, reveals, returns etc.

You're not past Arabasta yet so you got another epic moment coming.
