I gave a good portion of my life to the Navy and I guarantee you it was far from Uber with benefits.
Having been in for a short bit myself, I think the answer is more of a your mileage may vary type thing.
There's some folks that are in, and they're on someone's list of people who get their calls answered ASAP because they're worried about what could happen if they leave them hanging.
There's some that manage to go career and get to treat it like a 9-5 with the occasional stretch with working in a different state, or country.
And there are people that are somewhere in between. But it's definitely, like you said in another post, where the folks in category A give a whole lot of cover to those in category B.
The real problem is our country's fetish with the military automatically assigning near sainthood to anyone who served or is serving.
