Having been in for a short bit myself, I think the answer is more of a your mileage may vary type thing.

There's some folks that are in, and they're on someone's list of people who get their calls answered ASAP because they're worried about what could happen if they leave them hanging.

There's some that manage to go career and get to treat it like a 9-5 with the occasional stretch with working in a different state, or country.

And there are people that are somewhere in between. But it's definitely, like you said in another post, where the folks in category A give a whole lot of cover to those in category B.

Ever since I enlisted I met more people in the military who have not deployed compared to those who have deployed.
I used to work with a Marine who was an infantryman.
He talked about deployment like it was a vacation.

It’s just a job like any other job, with Uber benefits and perks because you’re “serving your country” when you haven’t really done anything. There’s no danger or sacrifice in going to your base every day and manning a desk or fixing/maintaining a couple planes after some drills
