Outside Of Nas himself, no one has done more for his career than Hov, Jay saved his career

People have revisionist history when it comes to Nas. Jay saved his career, twice.

First of all, prior to Ether and that beef, Nas was :flabbynsick: and history says he would have more likely than not been finished if Jay would have kept his mouth shut. That beef didn't end either one of them, but it helped Nas revive his career, while Jigga was murdering everything. Had Jay not dissed him, Nas could have probably been done after I Flab... And Flabtradamus.

Jay did Nas another favor by being kind enough to sign him to Def Jam, which he also didn't have to do, that helped his career in a big way too.

So instead of hating J-Hova, y'all should pay homage.

its actually the other way around
if it wasnt for illmatic, jayz would still be rapping like the Fu-Schnickens
nas designed his blueprint, who you kiddin:gucci:
That's not true. Illmatic had nothing to do with Jay directly, Illmatic helped a lot of rappers, and we should all be greatful for that. But Jay helped Nas' career directly.

Very one-sided perspective. The rivalry was great for both of their legacies....

1. Lit a fire under Nas who showed himself early as an All-Time great emcee, then went through a period of "uninspired work" (which itself is overblown, given the great music that was supposed to be on the original double disc).

2. Jay...The Blueprint era with the album, the battle, etc. solidified him as All-Time great status in terms of "Emcee" props after years of pop acclaim. Gave him his first undisputed classic and initiated a 2nd look at Reasonable Doubt.

shyt is like the Hip-Hop equivalent of Ali-Frazier IMO. The reigning champ (Jay/Frazier) and the former champ (Ali/Nas) have a classic war and both go down as GOATs + actually become cool after The rivalry.

Jay z is garbage, discography is weak as hell.

Nas was already working on Stillmatic before Jay dissed him, we were getting that classic regardless.

Jay thought Nas was done but he quickly found out he wasn't and cried on the radio.

Then he paid Nas $10MM to be his friend again and sign to def jam:ahh:
Jay got a better disco than Nas.

Blueprint > Stillmatic

I think as an old ass dude on this board, and part of SOHH and all that in 2000-2001, OP is pretty accurate.

I mean if you are 33+ you have to remember that Nas was like a running joke, and he wasn't getting any respect due to Nastradamous being kind of wack. Crazy to think that, but after Takeover, it was like pretty much everyone across the board saying Nas is finished, he's done, and close the casket. Bad album and deaded in a few bars.

That's what actually made Ether so huge that we are talking about it 15 years later. If this was just two heavyweights duking it out, thats one thing, but when Ether dropped, it was like a man coming from the dead, months later at that (Jay-Zs Takeover was so big that he did a live performance of it on MTV Unplugged way after Blueprint came out, and Nas had not responded yet to that point)...

Think of it as to why Back to Back was so big...because no one expected it.

No lie, when Takeover dropped it was like the world stopped - I worked in a warehouse, I was like 17, and the warehouse truck was outside with dudes from all races and ages standing outside of the truck while the driver was blasting Ether from the radio at like 8am, and everyone like :whoo::ohlawd::ooh::damn:

Truly a great moment in hip-hop history, that you will always remember where you where. But back to the point - yea, Jay-Z revived his career something crazy, because after Ether, he went radio, Stillmatic, HHID, etc etc etc, and really has not stopped since!

No Takeover was very good, it just wasn't Ether. That's all.
