I would put that likelihood close to nil, I just don't see it, or heard of armed robbers shooting children of the homes they break in. Armed robbers aren't at your place to steal your child, they are there to take your possessions. It's a risky bet, but I think if you put emotions aside his gamble may have been a rational decision to make.
