He did nothing different or above his norm. Everyone was on one and Carlisle coached a defensive scheme that was fukking with every superstar they played. The Dallas run was great but if there's any cap it's Dirk hitting this new height individually that he never saw before.
Dirk was literally unguardable in 2011 because of his skill. Not because Carlisle was drawing up these amazing plays for him. Same story with Luka. It’s Luka’s skill that kept the Mavs afloat these past couple years. He had a 7’2 poor man’s Dirk on his roster and he didn’t know how to use him (when he was available) Y’all overrate these coaches too much.

Between Doc keeping a job and this it shows if you can get just one ring as a coach you’re good for life
It’s hard winning 1 nba title no doubt. But a lot of them are simply carried by the talent on their team. Doc earned that 08 title, I can’t say the same about Rick’s in 2011 :hubie:

Once again, he did nothing different. If you're comparing this Mavs team to the chip team there's nothing to talk about further. Dirk does not win without Carlisle or that team. Y'all overrate Dirk too much.

You gotta go back and re watch the 2011 playoffs if you think he did nothing different. He elevated all aspects of his offense for the playoffs. Played 40 minutes throughout the playoffs and you think he did nothing differently ?

Maybe Dirk is overrated a lot. But if there’s one point in time where he deserved it was definitely in 2011.

History isn't on his side :ld:

This is the 19th time an NBA team re-hired a former head coach with the franchise (previously most recently Flip Saunders with the Timberwolves). Of the prior 18, 15 had a worse record than in their previous stint.

The three exceptions being: Cotton Fitzsimmons with the Phoenix Suns (the second, not the third, time), Lenny Wilkens with the Seattle SuperSonics, Alex Hannum with the Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers.

Except he didn't. He was the same scoring unicorn he's always been. He played 40 minutes a night in the postseason before. He didn't even shoot well on the biggest stage. The difference is team around him was built to mask his shortcomings this time. And the best player on the court forgot who he was.

The ring prolonged Carlisle's hot seat but there was no new heights to Dirk's offense. Y'all gotta stop acting like dude went Super Saiyan 3.

Doc had 3 HOFs possibly 4 but he earned that ring and Rick didn’t? Ye ok
Yes because despite the talent the Celtics were still tested that year. First 2 rounds went 7 games. Doc was coaching his ass off that year because he was about to get fired, one of his last good coaching years

Has a coach ever been a coach for one team, went to coach different teams, only to return to the team where they started before?
