I do wonder how US/Euro expats are able to survive monetarily.

If they don't have internet income or some other US/Euro funding, a lot of them end up in the "expat service industry"

You can't survive without income. A lot of Diasporans look at Africa with rose colored glasses and reality hits them when they arrive thinking they will acquire a garden of eden near the beach and eat off the land happily ever after. Some people were able to accomplish that bit they came with a plan and money. Most come with nothing and end up struggling and begging for money to get a plane ticket back to where they came from jaded as hell.
