That wasn't a rare occurrence.

Rich Boy had "Throw Some D's", which was huge. Album failed to go Gold.

Soulja Boy had "Turn My Swag On" and "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" and failed to go Gold.

Game had "My Life" featuring Wayne. Ni gold plaque.

Ross had "The Boss" and "Here I am" and only went gold with Trilla.

Three Six Mafia had "Lolli", which peaked at 18 on the Hot 100 and that album failed to go Gold.

Lil Mama had "Shawty Get Loose", which was Top 10 and the album failed to go Gold.

Snoop had "Sexual Eruption" one of his biggest hits and Ego Trippin was his first album that didn't go platinum.
None of those albums were flops lol

rich boy was the only one I feel flopped

@winb83 said it best as long as Jay here Nas can never be the GOAT

in that same 20 year stretch Jay dropped arguably 4 classics

Your own words disagree with you. You said hits sold more albums. How were these artists selling less albums or not really selling at all WITH hits?

Snoop Dogg was a consistently Platinum selling artist. How does he go from platinum to gold WITH one of his BIGGEST singles?

"The Boss" was Ross's biggest single, yet it wasn't enough to push him over the top.

"Lolli" as wack as it is, is still a hit, yet Three Six still couldn't manage a gold album.

"Throw Some D's" was huge, yet Rich Boy couldn't even go Gold.

Yet, by your own admission, hit singles meant selling more records and here these artists were selling less.
