McAfee thinks he’s building a rival. What he’s really building is "The Pat McAfee Show: Saturday Edition.” and the truth is, that’s not enough.

GameDay works because it’s a blend: tradition, analysis, stories, emotion, chaos in moderation. McAfee doesn’t blend. He blasts. And while that gives him huge initial numbers (Week 1 will boom), it doesn’t build loyalty. By Week 3, fans will realize there’s no structure, no evolution, just more of Pat being Pat, yelling into a mic with fewer guardrails and more beer.

And without ESPN’s leash? He’s got no backstop. You can only line-step so many times before it bites you in the ass.

He can still be a segment. Hell, he can be the spice. But you don’t build a meal out of hot sauce.
