Lose Westbrook in 2012 or lose him in 2017?
Westbrook in 2012 ain't worth a 200 mill deal.

And conceivably OKC could have used the franchise exemption on Durant in 2012, then Westbrook in 2017.

Just saying. I know y'all like to be contrarian for no good reason, but this idea is a step in the right direction. Elite players get paid their true worth while teams keep their franchise players.

It's a win win.

I think some of you dudes really think the players own the NBA lol

Worth $200 mil? No. But Westbrook in 2012 was definitely worth more than the $18 mil a year contract he signed. 24 with no injury history coming off back to back All-NBA 2nd team seasons

Westbrook wouldn't have even been around for 2017 if the franchise shyt existed

Teams already have a player on lock for the first 9 years of his career. If they can't convince him to stay after that, then they should just take their L and move on

Under the then salary cap, Westbrook certainly wasnt worth more than 18 mill a year. I mean that was a max deal for a player with his tenure under a 80 million dollar salary cap.

No team "should take the L and move on". Like I don't even know what your talking about. Only one team can win a championship per year. If it's really about "winning rings" then these franchise players won't take the tag and go play for 25-30 mill on another team instead of 40-100 mill for the team they're already on.

You're kidding yourself if you think a team wouldn't have offered Westbrook more than the 5/78 deal he got from OKC if they didn't have to worry about cap restrictions.

I'd rather have no max contract in general than come up with a rule who's aim is to try to restrict player movement even more

The thing is the owner's don't care about "superteams" or parity or any other buzzwords. It's all about the bottom line. Max contracts allow them to be lazy and cheap. "Superteams" generate interest that puts money in all their pockets. They aren't trying to implement a system that forces them to think, compete, and most importantly, pay.

How is that any different from the current max structure we have now? Bron and Horford are pretty much making the same amount of money so it's basically the same concept in regards to the cap room that their respective teams have left over. Only difference is that Bron's salary is depressed while Horford and other comparable players are hitting licks.

Exactly, the current system is trash

Lebron and durant should cost more than horford, so the team with horford csn pay for a better cast than what lebron and durant have.

Zaza pachulia and david west passing up 10 mil for the vet minimum is also terrible for competitive balance

It's not all about money though. If you are a shytty FO it doesn't matter how much money you have and if you know what you are doing limited money isn't as much of an issue. No matter what you do you can't force teams to be smart and you can't control players motivation.

Nobody thought KD would actually leave because it made more financial sense to stay in OKC. If you have a nice shoe contract you won't stay for money anyway.
Eh... many thought he would leave, breh. Many people said he could overcome the money by just signing a short deal because thats what all the stars are doing these days. Sign short deal with the second as a player option because since the cap keeps going up you can get more money by opting out and signing a new deal

He didnt leave much money on the table though. He took the same max deal, only difference is 4.5 percent raises vs 7.5 percent

He'll make that back by becoming a champ and a huge global icon

Until they get rid of max salaries were gonna continue to see this

Between cleveland and golden state you have 7 of the top 25 players in the league. Thats :mindblown:

Thank Jerry West and Bob Myers for that. Our talent is home grown besides KD.
