Listening to BBC last night they said that amtrak in the north east is the big money maker and subsidizes the rest of the system in the US. They are supposed to install these boxes that control train speeds and haven't, congress also cut funding to amtrak even though it's a money maker unlike most of our govt boondoggles.
Yeah, there was an article on this a few months ago.

AMTRAK needs SERIOUS funding.

They're responsible for a lot of the train's operation, but it mainly depends on what type of service; passenger or freight.
A passenger conductor has to alert the engineer of track conditions coming up i.e. Speed restrictions, workers on the track, etc. all that stuff will be in the paperwork you gather before the trip. They also have to deal with any issues with the train, or any switches that need to be thrown. They deal with yarding the the train. They have a whole host of duties, on top of also dealing with passengers.

A freight conductor is much more hands on with the operation of the train, mostly due to location. They sit up front with the engineer. They handle almost all of the communication with the dispatcher, and all the duties of a passenger engineer except dealing with passenger needs of course.

They expect that system to be the holy grail to stop train accidents, but it hasn't been installed because it's not fully developed. The hardware is good to go, but the software is the issue. Amtrak runs on other railroads' tracks. So the software has to be compatible with every railroad's systems that they use. All trains, including freight and local passenger service, were supposed to be equipped by 2016. There a very very slim chance they hit that deadline for it to be active anywhere.

its true...no one's opting for amtrak over driving from NY to DC other than the folks who can afford that luxury
Amtrak Seattle to Portland is LESS than gas money fukkin $35...detroit to chicago is less than flying...and amtrak doesn't compete with cars it competes with flying. And is always less than flight.

Your talking point is total bullshyt.

how many people travel that route per year? how many unique riders? Amtrak vs JetBlue on the east coast is similar
